So what's the vintage card for 2018?

Yeah Matty, your 14 cj JJ suggestion got me thinking about the Mount Rushmore of baseball cards. I'm sure it's been done on n54 before. And as I recall, Joe Orlando put together a Mount Rushmore of: t206 Wagner, 1952 Mantle, m101 Ruth, and the Hank Aaron rookie. I think the CJ JJ has a strong claim for the spot given to the Hank rookie.

Gonna be an Exhibit card because...

My long-planned book on Exhibit sports issues will be out before the National. I've already written the chapters on boxing, PC back baseball and champions sets.

Not suggesting they take off to the moon, but there has to be some goodly headroom with Colgan's Chips (Cobb & Wagner) and Domino Discs (Johnson, Matty, Cobb). These seem to have been relatively stagnant last chunk of years. Or do big time collectors don't really care for these issues and they will forever more be cast-offs.

Exhibits do seem to be drawing a lot of attention! Early vintage postcards in general are becoming more mainstream. Such an interesting side of the hobby with many rare and yet to be discovered examples out there.

I agree. In general I look to the cards that command a tidy sum even in the very lowest conditions; it just speaks to their significance and intrinsic value.

the 2018 Topps Heritage vintage cards are going to look like the 1969 design

This concept is getting so stale...these " vintage throwback classics are now looked at as " not very vintage or old or throwback at all...most collectors decided way back when, that any vintage old cards made in the late 60s..are considered " too new " to even collect. many don't even collect 50s anymore

I couldn't disagree more. When I started collecting cards I was 10 years old and began collecting cards of recognizable HOFers like Mays and Mantle. The first batches of cards I bought were 60s stars and HOFers. Then I progressed to pre-war. I would think the evolution is similar for others too. Getting a kid interested in old Topps sets is the only way to further vintage interest. I don't think any 10 year kid is going to tell you cards that look like older sets they've never seen are stale.

Plus, anyone who has a substantial collection better hope and pray that kids are still collecting .... we need a replacement base, and it appears it ain't happening

I can thankfully say I believe you’re wrong on this Neal. I’m 32 and amazed at how people in the 25-35 year old range are getting back into it. There seems to be a common theme I’ve noticed. Kids who collected in the late 80’s through early 00’s first get lured back in with high end boxes and breaks (tribute, museum, et cetera), then start buying the vintage cards they wanted as kids but could never afford. It’s never going to be like the 80’s again with virtually every boy in the country ripping packs of 88 donruss and fleer but I actually think the demand for vintage and high end modern items is going to greatly surpass everyone’s expectations (or should I say hopes?) over the long term. Many reasons for this but I think people only focus on schoolboys ripping packs for an indication of the hobby’s future.

As for cards of the year, again the Frank Robinson rookie as well as early Jackie and Willie cards. Amazingly undervalued IMO.
