Some great cards . . . 2018 was an amazing year. While I couldn't add a single Detroit OJ I flourished just about everywhere else. I had my best year ever with redemption coupons, cigarette packs, N333 Newsboys, and a few other odds and ends but my best pick-up of the year would certainly be these previously unknown Tomlinson cabinets of Lady Baldwin and Sam Thompson (two of my favorite players).

Joe- Lady Baldwin was born about 30 miles from where I live. I always thought I'd try to do some research on him.

Joe - those Tomlinson cabs are fantastic!!! What year would you place on each? Are they from 1886 (like Thompson's "outdoor" pose by the same studio)?

And Eric - I think you win 2018 with your uber rare cute baby pick-up.

Default 2018

Although it was a terrible year for signed T206 collectors, signed CJ collectors did very well! I was thrilled to add Roush and Wood to Marquard and Hofman this year. The only other ones I'm aware of are of Strunk and Hooper.

And I was able to add Cicotte to my signed T201 Collection:

But, I did manage to pick up this signed T206 from the Tom Marsilio TTM autograph collection through Steiner this past May:

Interesting subset Webster. And very cool that the Old Hoss middle finger card fits in it.

Packs, nice Mack, not the easiest HOFer.

Webster, what an interesting subset. That is the first time I've seen someone piece a "standing bat" subset together, outstanding! All those poses originate from 1887 photoshoots at Gray Studio in Boston. In each case the bat is likely the same Burlingame bat that I had previously studied on several of the original glass plate negatives from Gray Studio. How long did it take you to obtain all five?

Derek, they do date to 1886, all the Tomlinson's with personalized mounts (mounts that list the players name & position) date to 1886. Blank backed generic mounts also date to 1886. Tomlinson would add advertising to the mount back in 1887. I always hoped the portraits of Baldwin & Thompson would surface. Baldwin and Thompson, together with Charlie Bennett hold a special place in Detroit baseball history. Bennett would catch the ceremonial first pitch of the first home game from 1896 to 1927, frequently with his close personal friends Lady Baldwin and Sam Thompson at his side. Bennett was catching for Detroit well before Ty Cobb was born and would then would be part of the home opener ceremonies for all 22 years Cobb played for Detroit (I love the early Detroit history). I've been fortunate enough to accumulate all three in both portrait and action pose (Baldwin, Thompson, and Bennett).

Default Standing Bats

Joe,

Hines was one of the earliest OJs I purchased (shortly after Jay got me hooked a couple of years ago). Assumed the 'standing bat subset' was old hat. Williamson was the most recent - and final - addition this month.

Of course, the 'leaning bat subset' is also cool.
