Financially speaking, it is better to buy complete sets and upgrade. However, it isn't as much fun. It just depends on what your set building motive is: for fun or take money.

Better off buying complete sets especially if the more expensive cards are in decent shape. If I had to do it over again I wouldn’t worry about complete sets. I would buy the Mantle/Mays/Aaron in as high of a grade as one can afford and also buy high grade high numbers and short prints. Just my 2 cents worth. Good luck!!

I enjoy building sets by buying large lots of cards. I once put together a 1971 set at a net cost of $11. Sold it for $650. Bought large lots and sold off duplicates. It's a lot of work but it's fun to try and build a set for free.

This is the best method for building sets, I have used it for years and it has helped me to get to just 19 cards shy of the 1952-2010 Topps run
