From the article, "Back in 1890, a 13-year-old boy named Emerich Juettner boarded a ship in Austria..." Last time I checked, Austria is land-locked. Kind of hard to board a ship in a land-locked country. Last edited by vintagetoppsguy; 06-28-2019 at 11:54 AM. |

If this was in 1890, then Austria would’ve been a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which had sea access through what is now Croatia.

I'd stopped reading the article as soon as I'd read that, so I went back and gave it another chance. Wherever he boarded the ship, it's still a cool story. |

A person actually could have boarded a ship in Austria, on the Danube River. It flows from Germany, through Austria, and on through Romania, emptying into the Black Sea. The Danube has been navigable since probably before Roman times.
