I am super excited to get this one:
![]() ![]() As a refresher for those who might not know the history, Les Darcy is a HOFer with virtually no career issued cards. He died suddenly of a bacterial infection in early 1917 at age 21 but, like Mexican great Salvador Sanchez (killed in a car wreck at age 22), Darcy was so talented that he'd already secured a legacy worthy of a HOF induction. Since his career started in 1910 and spanned only a bit over six years, the cards that do exist (1922 Davies & Herbert, 1920s Romeo y Julieta, 1932 Sweetacres, 1933 BDV Tobacco) are post-career cards, which leaves this 1915 fight promo card as his only career contemporary card. Since that is what I aim to have for every HOFer, it has been on my 'buy if you see it' list for years.

Here's an EL RAY Cien Boxeadores card of Tommy Burns. It uses the 1921 Exhibit image and has a back that says it's made in Caracas. There was also a Jimmy Clabby that I assume one of y'all outbid me on. The Clabby also appeared to have the same image as his exhibit. Clabby does not have a lot of cards, so that was a nice grab. It's a little shorter than a T206. Any news on these? Are they in the Boxing Card Bible?

The El Rey cards are an entirely new discovery from Venezuela. Here's Clabby:
![]() the two appear to be from different series; this one looks like it is from a boxing rules (Reglas De Boxeo) series. Gonna be fun to see what else is in store for us from Venezuela. I don't think 'Cien' is a series; it appears to be an advert offering the purchase of 100 cards for 1.50 Bolivars, same as the ad on the back of the Clabby.

I just realized when you pointed it out that the backs are different. The Burns is not numbered. I was using my limited Spanish thinking that "cien" meant 100 to the set. Would you guess these are from the late 1920's or maybe later? Rob

Judging from the subject, look and the paper it is 1920s.
I looked at the card under a microscope. The front is photoengraved. That is consistent with other cards of the era from Venezuela. It reminds me a lot of the 1931 Doble Aguilas but that might be a bit later because of the fighters. Clabby was active until 1923; the image is from the 1921 Exhibit card. The Burns is also from the 1921 Exhibit set, so that would be consistent. If more of them show up we might learn more.

Sometimes, the backs are nicer than the fronts. Thanks to DaveW, 5 very tough steps closer to the Master Set.
And to be perfectly on topic instead of non-boxers-from-what-is-primarily-known-as-a-boxing set, here is a boxer-from-what-is-primarily-known-as-a-baseball-set. Turkey Reds must be the most aesthetically pleasing boxing cards printed yet. Not rare at all, but some of my favorites to pick up |
