As someone who worked in art and artifacts authentication, I've seen lots of fakes but have also had people who said they had no clue but had the real deal.

Including a guy who bought a Salvador Dali original print on a lark, and said "Not only do I not know if it's real, I have no idea how to find out." It was genuine.

I hear this ALL the time. "I don't know much about this piece, but I know 100% it is real."

So when one of these deals happens isn't the waiting for the item to be delivered greatly anticipated and a little nerve racking? Fortunately this time there is a good return policy.... It (they)are out for delivery so we will see if they turn out to be hero's or a zero's. ..............(for the record, these today turned out to be duds.)

I bought a raw T3 Ty Cobb about 16 years ago from a small unknown seller on ebay, that I wasn't completely sure about.

I sent it in to PSA and it came back a 1 (due to a missing bottom corner). The rest of the card though, is flawless.

Back in 2012 I was scouring Craigslist and found an add for a signed Babe Ruth program. The guy said his mom bought it for him back in 1993. He had a letter from Mark Jordan Autographs (he now works at Heritage). I met the guy in a Friendly's parking lot. Really weird guy, he wanted $4500 for the program.
After haggling for a while he came down to $2500, and said he'll sweeten the pot. He pulls out a signed dinner menu with Cobb, Aaron, Musial, Kaline from his trunk under all kinds of junk, along with original photos from the event (pics of Musial a little Tipsey, Cobb with a Cigarette, etc). He then comes down to $2K for both signed items. I haggle a little more - He throws in a Mantle/Williams signed ball - We settle on $1900 for everything.

Oh and did I mention the Ruth program was also signed by Walter Johnson and was for the War Bond game on August 23, 1942!!!!
It's a jumbo 4 inch signature - just gorgeous!!

I brought everything to JSA at the White Plains NY show a week later - and everything was spot on authentic!!!!!

The biggest score of my collecting days

His mom bought it for him? Yeah, that doesn't smell of B&E and selling for drug money.

Default I didn't win it but was in contact with the winner

Sometime between 1998 and 2003, there was a Maggie error card was on eBay that the seller listed as having just found, had done some research but said he didn’t know if the card was altered or the real thing. Everyone agreed it was an original but didn’t know if it had been scraped, erased, etc. Looked real to me but I was under-bidder by what ended up to be less than one dollar. In those days, you could contact the winner of a lot by eBay messages so I just asked if he planned on grading and if so would he let me know how it turned out. We exchanged messages off and on for about a month before he got his PSA 4 Maggie error card back.

That he won on eBay for $198.00.

Missed it by this much ...

This card was listed on Ebay as a reprint. I gambled on it & was very happy with the result.

I've had more of them in other hobbies, but have had a few in cards.

A card simply listed as "old baseball card" with a blurry pic of a Goerge C Miller.
It was a beater, but real. And the way it's beat up matches my others. The price was Ok, but not amazing.

A couple T206s sold ungraded with the usual seller warnings that they don't know what it would grade - they did pretty well.

The bikes and stamps.... Loads of deals on iffy listings, or just poor listings.

Default "Too good to be true"

Interesting thread because I will admit I did this very thing once a while back. However, up to this point I haven't put any effort into determining if it is authentic. So, upon disclosure I welcome any suggestions or help, or perhaps feel free to laugh. There was an auction on eBay that I saw close to the end that was selling a an original tintype photograph of Cy Young. There was a letter of provenance that said it came from his estate. I have no idea how to prove if the picture is really Cy Young; but, I thought it was cool enough and so I said what the heck. I don't have the picture here with me but can post it later. The truth is still yet to be determined or perhaps it's one of those cases where you'll just never know. But I even though I knew it was likely too good to be true, I did it anyway, but rarely do that.

A few months ago, an eBay seller listed a lot of four signed 1953 Topps, including Fred Hutchinson. The photo on the listing was terrible (I could barely see the signatures, much less make an assessment) but at something like $80 for the lot, I figured it was worth a shot. I pulled the trigger, and they turned out to be four very nice vintage signatures, including a very bold Hutchinson. Two others were upgrades.

He also had a lot of 1951 Bowmans that had a Hutchinson, but by the time I went back, it was gone.

Back in the early years of Ebay I used to do searches for oddball playing card types, and ran across a lot of a couple dozen Fan Craze baseball cards, including a bunch of minor HOF'ers.

No pictures, just a written description. Probably won the lot for under 50 bucks. I was ecstatic when they showed up.

In 2007ish there was a guy on Ebay (with very low feedback and nothing related to baseball cards) who had a large amount of 1955 and 1956 Topps singles he claimed were from his relatives collection when he was a kid in the 1950's. They were all raw and included all the stars from Ted Williams, Hank Aaron, and Sandy Koufax, no Mantles though.

They were all BIN's, not auctions, and only lasted a couple of weeks for sale. I purchased 3 1955 Topps Ted Williams, 2 1956 Topps Sandy Koufax and a 1955 Topps Hank Aaron for I think $300 total. When I got them back graded, they were all SGC 84 (7), except for one of the 1955 Ted Williams which was an SGC 88!!

By the time I went back to see if more were still available they were all gone.

Andy

I took a chance on a 52 Topps Mantle a couple years ago that was listed as a $150 BIN. It was beat to heck and only graded Authentic but I was very pleased obviously.

Being a Ruth fan can be expensive so I decided to concentrate on somewhat of a "niche", St Mary`s Industrial School related items. About 3 years back guy posted 3 or 4 1913 school calendars on EBAY with no reserve. Had seen maybe 1 before so decided to take a chance and won 2 for a very decent amount. Enclosed is the link to the "better" of the 2. On a side note, years later found a nice companion piece for them. A period ruler advertising the school and all the services they offered the general public. Great topic !

I bought that ball 6 or 8 years ago and sold it to a board member. Best $80 I ever spent. It's also signed by Babe Didrickson and a career minor leaguer on other panels.

I was contacted by a woman in Santa Barbara about 20ish years ago who emailed saying she found two cards in an old photo album of her father's. She described them but could not take a picture of them (before camera phones). She did not care about money and said they were in very rough shape. She asked for $100. I sent her the money, she sent me a two Mayos, both very rough but recognizable and real. Anson and W. Robinson.

What a rip off. Two no name players. !
I guess my small Trucker Boy find from several years ago was too good to be true. But it was true. I know this Arrelanes was from it and bounced back to me after it was sold in my first collection sale. It was a small card, as the seller sold them, so was priced at 50 bucks.
