Speaking about 1883, let's try another trivia question for you....what is significant about this year with respect to the Philadelphia Phillies ?
1883 was Philadelphia's first season starting a stretch that continues to this day. |

1883 was the year they were founded, and the longest running unchanged team name (if you ignore the "Blue Jay" years in the 40's)

You guys are just too smart, tonite. Not too many sports fans know that the 1883 Philadelphia Phillies are the longest continuous franchise in BB history. TED Z T206 Reference . |

cozmokramer There was a James Murray (born 1919) who was a well known Sports writer. Perhaps he was related (son ?) to the Jim Murray in 1883 ? That's just a wild guess on my part. TED Z T206 Reference . |

Are you sure about that Phillies tidbit? Baseball-Reference has the Cubs going back to 1876. They changed their name several times (although in the early days baseball team nicknames were pretty unofficial), but it's the same franchise.
B-R also has the Reds starting in 1882 as the Red Stockings, the Braves in 1876 (also as the Red Stockings), the Pirates in 1882 as the Alleghenys, and the Cardinals in 1882 as the Brown Stockings. The Phillies also apparently didn't use the name 'Phillies' since their founding. B-R lists them as the "Quakers" until 1890. |
