The 7 players ahead of him (Ewing, Anson, Keeler, Cy Young, Delahanty, McGraw and Radbourn) have all been voted in. The next 6 players on that list after Long (King Kelly, Rusie, Jennings, Clarke, Jimmy Collins and Wilbert Robinson) have been enshrined.

He died in 1909 so the fact that he received the 8th highest percentage of votes in 1936 means that people must have had a good reason to consider Long in 1936.

Anyone with any ideas why?
Fred, you should start a new topic on Long, so more people will see it. I can only add the little that I've read of his short bio's on the web, that he was a very good defensive ss, mentioned with Dahlen and Glasscock. He may be the best player from the Maroons, as most of them were fringe or obscure players. I would put him in the HOF, but I would also have Dahlen, Glasscock, Rose, Clemens, Bonds etc. in there, so I may not be the right person to ask about the Hall...Rob
