Day 70 (March 10, 2020 – 070)

Here we have a 1970 Baltimore Orioles player matchbook by Universal Match. I have a few matchbooks of the Oriole players, but don’t have all 24 in this set; may have to track them all down one day. The Brooks matchbook cover uses a familiar B&W photo of Brooks surrounded by an orange circle with Baltimore Orioles contained within the circle. I'm sure this has item has been posted before, but I really like the setup on these matchbooks.

The Orioles used this same image of Brooks on a lot of items. Here’s a 1969 Orioles picture pack using the same photo as the matchbook.

Those matchbooks are great! Wish they did something like this for the Pirates

Day 71 (March 11, 2020 – 071)

Pictured is a photo of one of the home-made stadium banners, “Beware of the Birds”, from the 1971 World Series which hung in Memorial Stadium. This is currently my lock page on my computer.

This is how I remember the 1971 World Series; Jose Pagan getting tagged out by Brooks Robinson at third base at Three Rivers Stadium. The ending of the Series I try not to think about…

It is a pretty neat item and well set up in my view.

Day 71 I used to commemorate the '71 World Series, but did it with a lean toward the Orioles of course. The third party scorecard I pictured I've only seen a couple of times so probably hard to come by even though not the greatest looking item in the world.

I just picked up this small cutout picture of Brooks and Manny Sanguillen last week from the '71 Series and failed to post it within Day 71. I pictured the same shot of Brooks and Manny in post #612 that was used for a book "Baseball: How to Hit and Run".

I ran across this Orioles organization binder and thought I'd post now since we've been seeing awesome minor league items. As you can see on the inside is an Orioles sticker that states, "MINOR LEAGUE DEPARTMENT". Wonder what was inside back in the day...

Mark,

Wow. I love it. My guess is that it is from either 1977 or 1979. I'm leaning towards 1979. I have the reports from 1978 and 1981. The 1978 is plain. The front looks more like the style used in 1981. Kate Patrick was in the Baseball Dept from 1977-1979. Too bad it's empty.

Did the matches when mailed arrive in this box? Notice on the side of the box; it states, "Universal Safety Match Books".

Day 75 (March 15, 2020 – 075)

How about a few small Baseball Digest publications that have Brooks on the cover. They are as follows:

Baseball Digest January 1971

Baseball Digest October 1971

Day 75 Baseball Digest October 1971 b.jpg

Baseball Digest July 1974

Default 1957 Stockton Ports

As most of you have noticed, I have put together a nice collection of Orioles minor league affiliate items. However, the most glaring holes in my minor league collection are the Stockton Ports. The Ports were affiliated with the Orioles from 1956-1971, except for a one year break in 1958 when they were a St Louis Cardinals affiliate. For some reason, Ports material just hasn't found it's way into the hobby in any quantity. I have a few items, but am always looking to add to it.

1956-1957 were interesting years for the Ports and I'll be discussing the 1957 team today. Mainly because I don't have anything from 1956.

The Stockton Ports played in the California League and were a Class C affiliate. They finished a disappointing 61-79. While the 1956 team featured Ron Hansen, the 1957 team didn't produce any future O's.

1957 Program

1957 Stockton Ports.jpg

One of the most interesting facts is mentioned in their program. While most teams have a major league working agreement, the Ports actually had an agreement with the Orioles AAA team, the Vancouver Mounties. Making them in fact a minor league team of a minor league team.

1957 Record Book - This is much like modern day media guides, with team history and records.

Anyone out there with anything Stockton Ports from 1956-1971, except 1958, I would love to hear from you...

Earl Weaver's hand written scouting reports (on Index Cards; stored in a simple metal filing box) for every A.L. player from his last season of 1986 ..Earl was very much ahead of his time when it came to using stats for pitching match-ups, defensive positioning, pinch-hitting, etc.
