Day 99 (April 8, 2020 – 099)
I went modern today with a couple of 2014 Panini National Treasures cards numbered to /99. I like the early shot of Brooks Panini used and the white setup of the cards look good to me. The one card has one of the several nicknames for Brooks, Mr. “Impossible”. 2014 Panini National Treasures Day 99 2014 Panini No. 51.jpg |

I think the orange Oriole jerseys look cool. Now when the O's went with the orange jerseys AND pants that was a bit much. Clint has for us today a 1978 Orioles AL Cy Young winner Mike Flanagan game used jersey. Mike 1.jpg Mike 2.jpg |

As promised, today I will go through the Brooks Robinson photos issued in the photo packs sold at the stadium. They are very similar to the Jay Photos, except that the team name is Orioles, instead of Baltimore Orioles, on the front.
Photo Packs were issued from 1961-1969. The variety of photos used of Brooks throughout the years is fairly small. I'm listing them all to help identify years, as they all have slight cropping differences or placement of the name. 1961 1961 Stadium 05.jpg 1962 1962 Stadium 05.jpg 1963 1963 Stadium 06.jpg 1964 1964 Stadium 06.jpg 1965 1965 Stadium 06.jpg 1966 1966 Stadium 05.jpg 1967 1967 Stadium 05.jpg 1968 1968 Stadium 05.jpg 1969 1969 Stadium 06.jpg 1971 F.R. Woods All-Stars Photo Pack 1971 F.R. Woods All-Star Photo Pack.jpg My research shows that from around 1971-1975, the Orioles PR dept sent out photos to fans writing the team. These photos weren't sold as packs, but are similar to the others. There are different several styles. I have Mark Belanger, Paul Blair, Bobby Grich and Dave McNally in the first style, missing Don Baylor and Brooks. I have Paul Blair, Jim Palmer and Brooks in a second style and Brooks in a third style. Also, team photos from 1973 & 1974. There could be others out there. 1971-1975 (2nd and 3rd Styles) 197175 Stadium 01.jpg 197175 Stadium 02.jpg 1971-1975 (Examples of 1st Style) SCAN4756.jpg |

Couple items from that night..One is a press credential that hung around the neck of a NY Daily News Sportswriter (you could see people wearing these on TV). The other was that ABC's 'Nightline' covered the event (who didn't?) & their crew wore these unique passes...Fortunately one of the Orioles PR staffers got a hold of one & saved it for me: ![]() ![]() |

In post #1122, I discussed GameDay and Outside Pitch programs, including some cards issued in conjunction with the programs. Here's a quote from that post -
"In 1992, an alternate to the programs sold at Camden Yards emerged. The programs were sold outside the stadium and eventually through a yearly magazine subscription. I started collecting them one issue too late and have all the programs printed, except issue #1. I have never seen it, but haven't given up hope of finding one. They lasted from 1992 until their last program in the beginning of 2010. The number of issues each year varied, but there are 192 different. The program was initially called GameDay, but in 1994 was renamed Outside Pitch. The publication's quality improved over the years." Obviously throughout the years, Cal Ripken Jr was a popular cover subject. Cal appeared on around 30 different covers. Cal's first two covers in 1992 and last cover in 2007 1992 Gameday (Vol 1 No 4).jpg 1992 Gameday (Vol 1 No 8).jpg 2007 Outside Pitch (Vol 16 No 6).jpg However, Brooks Robinson did appear on one of the magazine covers. As discussion of the demolition of Memorial Stadium were ongoing, the December 2000 issue reflected on the history of the stadium. The stadium would be torn down in February 2002. Day 248 (September 4, 2020 – 248)
The Orioles swept the A’s in three games in the 1971 American League Championship Series. In the 1972 Topps set, card #222, Brooks is shown being greeted and congratulated by Mark Belanger. 1972 Topps 1971 A.L. I apologize if these have been posted before, but a search of the thread didn't yield any results.
Shortly after the 1970 World Series, artist Carl Aldana produced a small set of cards of the Orioles. The cards are listed as 1970, but with the inclusion of two cards showing Brooks Robinson's famous catch from the World Series, the earliest printing would be late 1970. Aldana was from the west coast and produced several sets, including cards of PCL players. I'm not sure why he selected to print a set featuring the Orioles. The set contains 12 cards and includes two of Brooks Robinson. The cards are slightly smaller than regular Topps cards, more the size of 1951/52 Bowman cards. 1970 Carl Aldana Orioles set 1970 Carl Aldana #1.jpg 1970 Carl Aldana #2.JPG |

Like everyone else, I was saddened to hear that Tom Seaver passed away the other day.
Back in July of '85 I took in a Saturday afternoon White Sox/Orioles game at Memorial Stadium with Seaver pitching for the Sox. I took some pre-game photos of him warming up in the Bullpen and then one of him pitching to Cal Ripken Jr. Looking at that picture now, I can see that it now has four Hall of Famers in it... RIP Tom ![]() ![]() |
