For the longest time I had heard Foster was the toughest, or one of the toughest, so I picked one up several years ago. There are 9 on ebay right now.
Another list I've seen said Persons was the hardest, but there are 13 of them on ebay right now. Maybe others have more definitive info...

My research shows:
1. Reagan 2. Ellam 3. Cranston 4. Manion 5. Smith (Shreveport) 6. Hart (Little Rock) 7. Coles 8. Otey 9. Jordan (Atlanta) 10. Seitz The scarcity differences among these 10 subjects are not that great. For example, Reagan is about 5.6X scarcer than Cobb (Red) (the most common subject in the set) whereas Seitz is about 4.6X scarcer. As has been discussed on Net54, the Reagan featured in T206 is likely Steve—not Ed. Persons comes in at #14; Foster at #19 (out of 48). Last edited by sreader3; 04-26-2020 at 09:11 AM. |

I’ve never understood the Shaughnessy craze if he’s not the toughest.

I have completed several T206 sets, and "Shag" was always tough to find. Like you, I didn't quite understand why. Back in the late 1990's, at the Fort Washington Philly Show, I found out why. A customer from Canada bought the two Shaughnessy cards I had on my table. He told me Frank Shaughnessy has a huge following with Canadian collectors, they will buy any thing of his. So, the "Shaughnessy craze" is simply due to "supply vs demand". Frank is in the Canadian Baseball HOF and Football Hall of Fames and the McGill University Sports HOF. Here's a picture of him when he was the President of the International League (1936 - 1960). ![]() TED Z T206 Reference . |

As confirmation for what Ted said, I looked back at my old 1993 Beckett price guide and three southern leaguers were priced higher than the other 45. Shag was one of the three. (The other two were Perdue and Stark. No idea why.)

Didn't we find out several year back that someone was hoarding Shag, like someone else was doing with Titus? I think it was a high-profile auction house owner.
