Just watched game 7 of the 1979 World Series. O’s wearing their orange alternates. Still trying to figure out how Eddie Murray didn’t hit Tekulve’s first two pitches out with the bases loaded.

Default Happy Birthday Brooks!

Day 139 (May 18, 2020 – 139)

Happy Birthday Brooks!

Quote: "How many interviews, how many questions - how many times you approached him and got only courtesy and decency in return. A true gentleman who never took himself seriously. I always had the idea he didn't know he was Brooks Robinson." - Joe Falls of the Detroit News

On Brooks Robinson’s birthday I decided to picture a pretty cool poster. In the 70’s The Equitable Life Assurance Society of the United States put out some advertising posters of different predominant sports figures including Brooks. The B&W poster is around 17”x22” and states, “BROOKS! There’s nobody else exactly like him.” I know the poster has been posted before, but it’s one of my favorite setups on a poster and while it’s not uncommon, and it’s been shown before, it’s just COOL…

The 70’s Equitable poster

Thought I would show the stamp on the back of the poster of where it was displayed originally. The red stamping is small; unsure why it turned out so large when uploaded.

Also, have an Equitable ad that was in TSN that states basically the same statement that is on the poster, “There’s nobody else exactly like Brooks Robinson.” I have also included the George Loh print that was used for the ad.

Clint...I haven't watched that game in years lol

People forget that even though the Orioles lost the series, the city of Baltimore still had a parade for the club the very next day. Everyone was in uniform, wearing the orange alternate tops.

A few years ago, I purchased this 1979 Mark Belanger jersey from a lady, who as a young girl attended the parade with her parents and when it had all concluded, Belanger removed his uniform top and tossed it off the stage to her. I've always wondered if it was the same one he wore the night before.

P.S. Happy Birthday Brooks!!!

Bill it was difficult to watch knowing the outcome but wanted to check out the jerseys and helmets used. Great Belanger jersey by the way and story.

Happy Birthday Brooks!

Bill,

That's an interesting question. It looks to me that the jersey has a 1978 tag. I wonder if players use jerseys from one year to the next if they had little wear. Alternate jerseys would in theory get less wear than regular home/away shirts. Since Belanger was with the Orioles both years, maybe he did reuse some jerseys. The other explanation is that the Orioles gave out jerseys from the previous year at the parade. Either way nice jersey.

Default 1970 World Series tankards

I can't remember if either of these have been posted yet or not, but a couple of nice tankards from 1970. The first one is from American Airlines and celebrates Brook's MVP performance in the World Series.

The second one was sponsored by Chrysler Corp. for the 1970 World Series vs the Reds.

Good looking mugs. Neither one comes up that often. I don’t think either one has been posted yet unless they may have been in the background.

Love the AA mug and would like to get one someday.

Bill if I ever find a match to your Belanger jersey I’ll let you know.

Great stuff guys, keep it coming.

Default Hof

Day 140 (May 19, 2020 – 140)

Ticket to gain entrance in the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum dated May 19, 2003. Nice grouping of Brooks items pictured on the ticket. I enjoy visiting the Hall of Fame, but haven’t been in the past few years. I “need” to get back there.

Let’s not even get started on the players who don’t belong or should be in…

Alan:

Nice mugs! I know it was difficult to see, but the Belanger tag is indeed from 1979. The other hope I had was that it was the jersey he wore when he went out to shallow left field & "tiptoed" to catch the last out of Game 1 of the Series:

Here is a press photo of Weaver from that parade:
