Day 158 (June 6, 2020 – 158)

To celebrate Al Kaline’s thirtieth year association with the Detroit Tigers Homeplate Sports Cards issued a 72-card set called the Al Kaline Story. Below are a couple cards that picture Brooks within the Al Kaline set.

Bill,

That must be the Frank Robinson helmet you have in your collection pictured in the 1974 All Star card…

Good morning Mark,

I married into a Detroit family and Kaline was my father-in-law's hero. The two of us had a chance to meet him at the 2014 National in Cleveland. Also, as Kaline was a Baltimore native, my grandfather played American Legion ball with him. My grandmother insists there is still a photo of that team buried somewhere within her house. I keep offering to help her find it, given its historical value, but still no luck to this day. Thank you for posting the photo of Brooks and Kaline.

This pennant has been featured in another thread on Net54:

https://www.net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=283392

The seller cut up two complete sheets and sold them on Ebay. I purchased one Orioles and one Tigers pennant.

I'm reaching out to all the collectors I know who specialize in oddball items (many of them not on Net54) to see if anyone has anymore information on their origins.

Default Alan Maver Newspaper cutouts

In previous posts, I've mentioned I like newspaper cutouts that have the appearance of baseball cards or postcards.

Alan Maver (1909-1984) was a cartoonist that provided drawings for newspapers for many years. I have no idea how many Orioles he did, but it would be nice to know if he ever did a Brooks Robinson.

Here are the few Orioles I have from the 1950's.

Mark:

Very cool items; I love the dual signed card & photo of Kaline & Brooks.

The helmet Mark mentioned isn't an Oriole item per se, but it's Frank Robinson's 1974 GU batting helmet from the California Angels (which I believe I posted on Net54 when Frank passed).

It originated from a clubhouse kid in Anaheim who got the helmet after Frank was traded to Cleveland in September of '74 and even wrote the date on the interior label (I had him sign it at a show in 2008):

On the topic of Al Kaline and the Tigers, here is one last non Orioles game used batting helmet from Bill Ripken's last MLB season in 1998 (Ironically #14 was the same uniform number worn by Billy Chapel/Kevin Costner in the 1999 movie 'For the Love of the Game'):

Day 159 (June 7, 2020 – 159)

Hopefully Alan (BaltOrioles) won’t correct me on the year of these things. I believe these to be 1960 Jay Publishing photos.

Mark,

I think you are correct. Both the 1959 and 1960 Jay photos of Brooks look similar to me. Feel free to use post #1149 for reference.

Default 1963 Orioles Team Issued Postcards

Back to my roots today. Here are the Orioles team issued postcards from 1963. The postcards are B&W and 3 1/4" x 5 1/2". I have 36 of the known 37 postcards, missing only Luis Aparicio. A couple of players have multiple cropping differences, Steve Barber and Bob Johnson. The set is highlighted by Brooks Robinson and Robin Roberts, along with the first postcard of Dave McNally. For some reason, the set also included phenom Steve Dalkowski. Dalkowski is on a lot of collector's want lists.
