To see if it was just a NJ thing, I tried putting different items in my cart from a wide variety of Jersey sellers, and each and every time I went to check-out, tax was added. I'm convinced (woo hoo!!) my experience was nothing more than dumb luck.

I'm in California and bought a card this weekend on ebay from a seller in Florida. They charged tax as usual on my purchase.

It may have been a tax holiday. Usually it is for back to school items only however, some states have a broader variety of items that are exempt. Maryland was this past weekend and I believe Virginia was the weekend before.
