Default Show me your ugliest cards, your beaters

I've been going through my collection, selling off some cards, adding some too. In the process I've realized there are certain cards I own that I'll never sell and never upgrade. They're perfect as is, impossible to improve on in my mind.

Here are a few of the beat up cards I'll never part with. The Jackie was my dad's, bought when he was seven. The Mays was my uncles.

What beat up ugly cards are you in love with that will stay in your PC?

Those are some really nice "ugly" cards. I'm hoping someone reposts the E121 Ruth with the drawings.

That Aaron is a 1, but I would not consider it a beater at all!

Crawford, throw has only two non-Pied/SC backs: The very tough OM, and easier Sov.350.

Mine has it all ......................

The Ruth is amazing. Remarkable someone would have saved it like that, I'm sure you're glad they did!

Some of my best (worst). I bought the Mick for $25 back in 1988 when I was 12. The card store let me make a couple payments on it.

Thanks, I'm glad they did too. It is actually in two pieces, and I did some artful placement when inserting it into the Card Saver sleeve, and then scanned it without taking it out of the sleeve.

$25 for the Mantle. I'm trying to remember how many lawns I'd have had to mow to make those payments back then.

This is probably the worst card I have in any of my set builds. I'm chasing this '62 Post in '1-piece' condition. If it's in 1 piece, it's fine by me.

My top collecting focus is cards of all the players on the 1924 Washington Senators WS Championship team. All the cards of the 18-card 1925 Holland Creameries World's Champions set, a Canadian set, are of 1924 Senators players. I had these 16 beauties roughly 20 years ago. I have since been able to upgrade 4 of these cards: Judge, Mogridge, Ogden & Zahniser, and I'm hoping to upgrade more of them.

Finally, a game that I can play!

The Ott card was cut in half, but then somebody thought better of it and glued it back together. And then they trimmed off the bottom for some reason.

Does that qualify it as "altered"? Your Satchell Paige would fit right in with my Jackie Robinson.

It's in rough shape but I'm happy to have this Donnie Bush it's an extremely
tough combo. It's the only one I've ever seen although I do know of another
one that a collector friend has. There are none in the PSA or SGC pop reports.

Coincidentally, I stumbled across a website that someone made for Kid Elberfeld today. Might as well leave the link here, given the card in the post above this one.

This is totally an OBC thread, we collectively own many of the worst! But when an OBC'er sends a card like this to a fellow member, you simply cherish it, and never give a thought to an upgrade.

First old card I ever got.

Unlikely I would ever spend the $$ to upgrade this one.

When it comes to Venezuelan Topps cards, this is actually pretty good condition.

Find me another one...

I have several cards that would fit well in this thread, but here are just a couple for now.

I think Brian Parker could win this thread if it was a competition.

This Brian fellow sounds like my kind of guy. I might try to come up with some scans to offer some stiff competition. Although there was a fellow collector on here, a Mr.Hatch, who is no longer active, that I used to send some of my rejects, so I think it is probable that he would have the winning hand when it comes to downright ugly.

Beat up Ruth card with pin hole (nail hole?) right in the middle. I imagine it being tacked to some kid's wall or headboard back in the 1930's...and that's pretty cool.

Here is a Zeenut I just scanned today, as well as a few others that people might enjoy looking away from. In case you were wondering the blank one is the front side of a Diamond Stars card of Rogers Hornsby.

Brian (sadly, many of these I no longer own, but I still have the Hornsby with the blank stare)
