This set is, IMHO, the finest pre-war issue. The photos are almost all from Conlon, who had a gift for capturing the soul of the players. Images so iconic that are used in many subsequent sets, including the derivative cartoons of the Goudey sets.
I wrote an article for Old Cardboard in 2016 that reflected the state of knowledge about the set at that time. As a teaser, I have recently discovered that the traditional nterpretation of the short print story is wrong. It’s not a simple “Ruth in, short prints out” explanation. I’ll write it up and post it later or try to do a follow-up for Old Cardboard.

Even though Conlons, pictures don't really pop. Seem washed out looking a lot of the time. |
