Wow cool finding. So they actually used it as a team specific logo. I thought it might have been more akin to the sliding runner baseball pennants where the pennant maker just slapped on a generic graphic. Makes sense if it is mid 60s, probably came after the pennant with the gold printing. I noticed that the Chiefs AFL has two versions, one has a touch of white in the dancing Indian and the other is all red. My guess is that the single-color AFLs came later but Football Rob would have a better idea.

Sportslogos.net dates this as 1963, at least the shield part of the logo.

Seems like the letters etc. were sent out between the 1963 and 1964 seasons ("new seats approved for 1964 season").

I always thought the player had a hook for a hand; and, he was trying to secure his hook to the sabre/logo overhead. But, upon further inspection, it appears like he has a regular hand ... and, yes, he's grabbing the blade-end of the sword.

Which makes no sense.

No wonder they scrapped it.

Cool.

I think the Raider is a receiver, waiting for a Tom Flores bomb.

It's hard to say with the AFLs. There are plenty of examples of single color pennants that can easily be attributed to the earliest days of the AFL. The Los Angeles Chargers have several and only existed for 1960. The Dallas Texans do as well (as you well know given recent events ). Also, the New York Titans.

And the AFL logo is not really a good indicator of age either, as it appears to have been used so intermittently. There are early examples of Texans and Titans with it, so we know it began somewhere between 1960-62, but then many other examples from later in the decade that do not have it.

I’m mainly thinking of the Trench pennants, it seems that when they started using NFL/AFL logos they didn’t stop. The later ones we see without are probably other makers like Ad Flag.

New additions ... it seems we have been collecting mini pennants all along. (These are six feet long.)

Nice, Greg. I saw that Astros pennant one time about three years ago. Pretty cool. You might need to go to a cubicle system if you are going to display those.

That’s interesting ... I have a vague memory of the early days of eBay, bidding on a huge orange Mets pennant. Can’t say I’ve ever seen another and Google searches all come up empty. Pretty obvious that they were made by ASCO - very well made - what’s interesting is that these are all identical versions of their 1969 pennants, enlarged to scale except for their fat MLB trademark which is the same exact size as on the 30” pennants.

Have no idea how/where I’m going to display these.

I was the underbidder on the Astros. I think it sold for about $250. I thought it was really cool, but I could not think of a place to hang it.

Why not on the floor of your rec room? Put them under a clear plastic sheet, and just think of it as the world's biggest pennant cover.

More realistically, maybe the ceiling is the place? I know "Baseball Rob" might agree!

Realistically I’ll keep them on the pool table for a few days then put them in a tub to be discovered by whomever breaks into my house to find my deceased decaying body in or around 2055. Or I might just put them in the hallway to the basement. These are pretty wild, though ... the sheer size of them would suggest that they are likely to survive. I wonder if they were made for sake to the general public or fir other specific purposes. I wonder if somewhere there is a white Pilots ... that would be amazing.

I PM'ed Greg that years ago (I'd say 20) I saw a big Giants pennant on ebay. I didn't get it. Greg said he'd like to see it and I was gonna send this pic just to him, due to the extremely poor quality. Then I thought "what the hell".....we "pennant guys" need to share. Also, here's a pic I've posted before of a giant Giants pennant at some 1060's Giants function. This pennant may be similar to Greg's finds.

There's a white version of that Raider pennant. I have only seen one but I haven't been collecting that long

That graphic has always confused me. Is the raider ... riding a horse?? I get that he has a hook for a hand, and said hook got fouled up on the Raiders logo somehow ... but I always assumed he was being chased by another player/pirate. Now I'm not so sure.

The white felt actually brings the image into focus (even though the image is low res).

It's a logo the Raiders used in the early 60's. It's a strange logo but I guess with not much money in the early AFL days, graphics left a lot to be desired!

Haha.... no horse, and no hook-hand. Just a well-covered receiver reaching up for a pass. Agree it's an unusual logo, but still more imaginative and far superior to the simplistic and "corporate" looking NFL logos of today.

Take the de-evolution of the Rams logo, for example...

Ouch...Don't get me started on that one. I don't think it can get worse than the 2020 rebrand. They had it so right from the early 50s through the 70s. But it's too easy of a money grab to pass up. They know the suckers will re-buy everything with the new logo on it no matter how bad it is.

Now look what you did...You got me started.

Regarding the Raiders pennant...It's weird to me that the logo was still in use in 1965 yet that pennant is extremely rare. The Raiders have four "logo" pennants with the AFL trademark (well five if you count the white version Randy shared), more than any other team. They must've realized that logo looked like crap on a pennant and went with the more common Raider head with crossed swords instead...which may be the most common of the Raiders AFL logo pennants and yet sells as if it's very rare.

Now the JR “2nd Baseman” version? THAT is super duper rare. As is the elusive Luke Easter pennant of the same style and maker (WGN).
