I'm sure they are well aware of this, and it gives them every incentive to keep the high-grade populations down. Whether they do it by rewarding favored submitters, or by creating subjective "extra-super-duper-mint" standards that are (a) essentially intangible and (b) practically unattainable, or by some combination of both, I'm sure they do it.

Of course you know why. It generates incredible profits for many many people.

It’s simply about money and greed. Not about love for baseball cards or the game. This too shall pass just as it did two decades ago. I collected for the love of the game then and still do.

Indeed. And by all accounts they have gotten much more stringent over the years (overall, albeit wildly inconsistently). What was a 7 twenty years ago would be a 5 today, etc. Of course this is necessary to keep the high-end populations down as more and more cards get graded.
