Robbie claims it's about Nazareth, Pennsylvania, where the Martin guitar factory was. But like many great songs, the listener can interpret it his or her own way and not be wrong. To me, there are clear religious overtones, starting with Nazareth, continuing with the Devil, and ending with Moses and Luke and Judgment Day.
I think it's also no coincidence Robbie asked one of the world's great gospel singers, Mavis Staples, to sing part of the song in the Last Waltz.
