Total agreement about all of this. I like the thread!!!
TGOTT is among the best of the baseball books for prewar players. When The Grass Was Real, I recommend, for a subsequent read. Bressler... W514 is the one I have. He's on a few Exhibit cards from the mid 20's. No other contemporary cards come to mind. After those, if you find Rube on a ball card, it might be one of those 'modern' Conlon cards from the early 90's. (Wow, those cards are almost 30 years old. In the mid 60's, when I discovered baseball cards, I had no concept of there being ball cards 30 years old.) Mr. Ritter wrote a great book. There was an LP album with some interviews, if you have a turntable you might find a scratchy album. There's a 4 cd set that I replayed in my car last month. It's great listening to Joe Wood, Fred Snodgrass, Hans Lobert and Davy Jones pronounce the names of ballplayers that many of us mispronounce... Evers (EEE-vers), Cicotte (SY-cot), Wagner's first name... and others. Best of all, a fellow doesn't have to get PSA or SGC or anyone to grade and encapsulate Mr. Ritter's book in order to enjoy it. |
