Cool piece, Joe.

This week in Jackie Robinson history, in early 1950, filming for _The Jackie Robinson Story_ was underway. Most of the baseball scenes were filmed at Gilmore Stadium, home of the PCL's Hollywood Stars.

Less than a week for the MLB and PA to hash things out if they want to preserve Jackie Robinson Day on April 15th, which just so happens to be the 75th anniversary of Jackie's MLB debut. Would be a shame if the strike forced it to be pushed. Scott Boras has been eyeing March 15th as an outside date when things would be worked out. Let's hope he's right and the season can kick off in style to celebrate Jackie's semisesquicentennial.

This one is from the presumed Feldstein find. I purchase the 24 card set from the Baseball Card Society back in 1990. I saved all the related data so there is some provenance to these cards along with Mr. Robinson.

Regardless of what it is or where it came from. It is cool, old, and mine!

Cheers,

B. T.

Dang I posted this twice in this thread. Sorry about that.

The Shindana's aren't weird at all. They are from a game. There are two varieties, yellow back and red back (came in perforated sheets).

Here is part of a box cover:

The board game was pretty basic. It came with puzzles and each card had a value in puzzle pieces. Answer correctly and you get some pieces. Here is the Joe Louis puzzle:

Oddly, there wasn't a Jackie Robinson puzzle.

A few years ago a set of cabinet sized cards was discovered. The art on some of the cards differs from the art on the regular cards. Perhaps a prototype or proof set?

I've not seen the Robinson in the large format.

Thanks for the info, Adam.

Happy Jackie Robinson Day. Here Jackie is the welcoming committee for the first black pitcher, Dan Bankhead.

1947JRBankheadDebut

In 1947, after Jackie Robinson had broken Major League Baseball’s color barrier, Dodgers’ General Manager Branch Rickey needed to find more pitching talent for Brooklyn to make a push for the pennant. Eventually, Rickey and his scouts decided on the red-hot right hander from Memphis. In the end, the Dodgers paid $15,000 to sign Bankhead. The Alabama Tribune reported on the signing with a story titled “Red Sox Ace First Hurler in ‘Majors.’” In the story, the Tribune reported:

“Bankhead while under close scrutiny by the eagle-eyed Rickey and his veteran scout, George Sisler, last Friday night at Martin Stadium gave impressive account of himself as he struck out eleven batters to win over the Birmingham Black Barons 7 to 2. He has struck out 113 batters in 109 innings.”

Bankhead soon found himself in New York, as a teammate and roommate of Jackie Robinson, and the first African American pitcher to pitch in the Major Leagues. He made his debut on August 26, 1947 at Ebbets Field against the Pittsburgh Pirates. In his debut, Bankhead struggled. He gave up ten hits and eight runs in three and one third innings. The Dodgers went on to lose 16-3. In fact, Bankhead batted much better than he pitched, hitting a homerun in his first appearance. The Daily News the following day ran the headline, “Pirates Overwhelm Flock, 16-3 Bankhead Routed, Hits HR.” The story also said, “Bankhead entered to the accompaniment of a standing ovation.”

Well, I definitely can't hang with the amazing autos already posted, but this is my only vintage Jackie and it's pretty clean for a 1.

Dodgers premium saluting the Legionnaires. I guess they were having a convention and made a deal to go to the ballpark?
