Amazing year by Mize. Took me a little bit to figure that out before I scrolled down to the rest of the thread.

In 1932, Joe Sewell hit 11 home runs and struck out only thrice. Yep, only 3 strikeouts in 503 AB's.

His best year was probably 1923 when he had 12 strikeouts in 685 plate appearances. He batted .353 with a .456 OBP and actually grabbed 98 walks (unusual for guys who strike out as little as him, as they are mainly looking to make contact at all costs). Also in 1927 he had 3 stolen bases and 16 caught stealing. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Interesting. Wouldn't having a great eye for the strike zone be consistent with both lots of walks and few Ks?

When you're THAT averse to striking out, you are generally protecting the zone at all costs. To be clear, not many players (none off the top of my head) was as averse to striking out as Joe Sewell ![]() Also, to be clear, Joe Sewell was not exactly a walk machine either. 1923 was definitely one of his better years as far as that's concerned. I had to check on my man Ted Williams. He never hit 50 HRs in a season but in 1941 he hit 37 HRs against only 27 strikeouts. And he was walked 147 times!!

Very few current players accumulate more walks than strikeouts. I think Pujols and Soto are two of those very few. .
