It was indeed hit batsmen.
As a corollary to the trivia. It is often said that Drysdale and Gibson were the two most intimidating pitchers of their era because they weren't afraid to hit you. Drysdale only walked 2.2 batters per 9 innings which is pretty impeccable control. HE hit a batter every 23 innings or so. Gibson walked 3.1 per 9, which isn't terrible but certainly is considerably less accurate than Drysdale. He hit a batter roughly every 38 innings. Based on those stats Drysdale was plunking guys intentionally quite a bit more often than Gibby!
