Its utterly ridiculous that companies want to get paid for the service they provide.

Hot take here.
F&F is a service that Paypal offers, and that people take advantage of... because it's a service that Paypal offers... Period. It's basically a straight wire service similar to aspects of Venmo (which Paypal also owns) and Zelle. Don't mistake the terms "Friends" or "Family" as literal. Paypal doesn't have hundreds of customer service folks scouring ancestry dot com and Facebook pages, every time a payment goes through. They don't care your actual relation to the person you're sending money to. It's simply their..."we'll send your money free, because it's your money and it doesn't cost us anything to do so...and in return, you will not whine, complain or ask us for help if you get conned, catfished, ripped off, scammed, taken to the cleaners, natural disastered, Ponzi schemed or crypto bro'd." It's like handing over a pile of cash to somebody. You don't go back to the bank after leaving the ATM, and ask them to get your money back because a grifter on the street conned you in a shell game on your way to the casino. Once you remove that money from the machine...all bets are off. At some point, Paypal makes their money somewhere along the money trail. Trust me. They'll be fine. Just don't go overboard (35 a month does seem like a lot) or complain to them when things go south on you. .....or take the time and go do the Venmo and Zelle thing a ma jigs that I mentioned earlier. By the way, Paypal already told me I can't accept F&F payments anymore, because I have a "Business" account with them (new policy). They did say I was welcome to open a "Personal" account with them so I can accept F&F payments...but I haven't bothered to go through the hassle of taking them up on that quite yet. |

Zelle is the best truly free option.
Venmo charges a fee; unsurprising since it is a PayPal company.

I agree with Dave. It’s never been my understanding that PayPal considers it abuse to do this in moderation. They’re absolving themselves of responsibility if anything goes wrong and it costs them nothing to process it, so they use it as the carrot to get you into their system. Tons of companies and financial tools do this; some features are free to attract you into the platform and keep you active, while others are the revenue centers. They don’t want people running full fledged businesses on F&F but they have never even tried to stop this in decades.
Whether you should purchase items without protection is another question, but PayPal does not seem to care or have a problem with it. Now, as a PYPL shareholder, please use G&S for everything you ever buy and run all large transactions through it. Please. |

Venmo has a free version and a Goods and Services version also, as long as you're not using a Credit card to transfer the money. Now that I think of it, I think it's pretty funny that Paypal runs two platforms, that on the surface seem pretty identical to each other. |

The F&F is confusing but I always thought the reason there are no fees is because when you use F&F paypal isn't providing the protection that they do with G&S that's why it says sending to someone you trust. The way I read it in paypals terms using F&F for a purchase on the BST for example is within their rules and if I'm wrong maybe one of the lawyers on here can clarify what this means. When you send money (initiated from the "friends and family" tab of the "send money" flow to, or receive money into your paypal account from, friends and family without making an underlying commercial transaction (that is, the payment is not for the purchase of goods or service or for making any other commercial transaction) we call that a "personal transaction" and I think when you spoke to them that's why they said to open a personal account to do F&F transactions. |

Yes, I covered that, but in a much more snarky way , here: Quote:

To be clear, I never actually spoke with them. I didn't run afoul of them or anything. It just became part of their general policy. Telling me to open a Personal Account was just part of their boiler plate message. Nobody with a business account can accept F&F or Gift payments anymore, as of a month ago or so. I was able to accept those types of payments before that without an issue. I think it's part of trending literalist definition of the word "business" account, for accounting or IRS reasons. I actually went to pay my power bill a couple weeks ago and used my Paypal Debit card, and it got rejected for being flagged as from a Business account. Told me I had to use a different card. Never, ever happened before that. I've always mixed business and personal with my Paypal account, but always claimed which was which properly. Maybe they see an issue with that now. Not complaining, just the way it is. |
