And their decisions have proven to be more successful than they ever had any reason to anticipate! The Nationals franchise, with a depleted minor league system and devoid of high draft picks, is on the market for $4 BILLION 15 years after the Lerners paid MLB a TENTH of that. The AVERAGE ML salary is now $4.2 MILLION, what a franchise might have sold for at some point in my lifetime. Where's all that cash coming from? Look in the mirror, my friends!

If you like old ballparks, check out Rickwood Field in Birmingham. Opened in 1910 and still operating today. Connie Mack helped with the design. Cobb, Mathewson, Wagner, Ruth, Satchell, Mays, Aaron, Reggie Jackson....they all played at Rickwood.

If you're speaking of the Nationals, they did both of those. The Lerners have been terrific owners and Mike Rizzo a great GM, giving us wonderful, winning teams from 2012 thru 2019, stocked with many of the very best players in the game, and culminating in the amazing season and world series of 2019. That's about as good as you can do before it all falls apart over free agency--most teams can't give everybody $400 million contracts--and you have to start over. It was true of the great Nationals teams of 1924-1933 and of this one a hundred years later. As a collector of the former and a fan of the latter, I have no complaints!
