The 1899-1900 M101-1 is a very interesting set. Here is a link to a fairly recent thread about the set along with the closely related National Copper Plate issue:

I agree, seeing these in person really helps one to realize how beautiful they are! I think they are among the most interesting (biographies on the back), beautiful and important (many key Rookie cards including Wagner) sets in existence. Here are the Edward Delehanty from the Sporting News and Dummy Hoy from the Natl Copper Plate version.

Beautiful. What I really enjoy is seeing the date that the Sporting News were issued.
