Actually, you can stretch that AL list to six (8 if you don't mind overlap with NL), as the Red Sox won the A.L. flag in 1986, and the Braves won the NL pennant in 1991 (so '1981-86 AL, 1987-1991 NL with no overlap).
You win and have exceeded expectations! This "overlap" concern was not part of the original specifications and therefore not a disqualifier to your extended answer, adding 1986 Sox, 1987 Twins, and 1988 A's.

Considerable extra credit and an A+ grade given!
