What I have never understood is why vintage packs sell for a price that seems to assume that the most expensive card in the set is in that pack.

It's never made any sense to me, if that's the case, just buy the card so there is no question about what you have. I get there are collectors who buy packs for the esthetic of the wrapper but to pay for a 52 Topps pack assuming there is a Mantle in every pack seems crazy to me.

Another one valued way up there that was opened recently was a 2003-04 basketball Exquisite Collection which I think had a Lebron James Jersey auto rookie numbered to 99. The seller had bought a three-pack case, and was opening them one at a time.

For those that aren't aware of modern box prices, Topps does a product annually called Transcendant that costs about $30K, and includes a whole bunch of HOF autos, a cut signature of a legend, and a ticket to go to a player meet and greet.

Unopened packs and boxes are things in and of themselves. Different from just the sum of the cards inside.

More than mantle would sell for a hundred k if you pull a 9 or 10 so this comment about needing to pull the best card is not accurate. People on here aren’t that ignorant are they? Why was he getting responses like yeah that doesn’t make sense. Maybe because it wasn’t accurate.

On a set like 1952 Topps, the odds of pulling ANY card in a 9 or 10 are nearly 0. You're more likely to pull 5-7s with a few OCs and one scrap card with severe gum and/or wax residue. If the pack has ever been dropped or bumped in the wrong way, you're starting off at no better than 4s across the board.

If you're not opening a high series packs (which is unlikely), even the 9s won't return enough to cover the cost of the pack. You're basically hoping you pull a Mays or a Pafko in 9+ condition, and that simply not a gamble that's going to pay off

The odds aren’t great but they are much better than finding a raw one. Also according to everything I have ever heard the 10 pafko came from a pack. Also the 55 bowman mantle got a 9. The chances aren’t zero. You saying something doesn’t make it true. This isn’t politics where opinion all of a sudden has become the same thing as fact.

Yes…why is this hard to understand? Packs are cool, they represent restraint against the temptation to open and there are very few survivors.

Does anybody know what the going price for a pack of Piedmonts (or other brand) of cigarettes is going for? We'll assume there's a tax stamp on the box indicating a T206 could be inside the package.

Paying a spot in an unopened back break is basically gambling, right? I have no issue with it, but call it what it is. Odds are you will be getting a "high grade" card. As long as the centering isn't horrible and you don't draw the back of the pack which may leave some wax staining or gum marks, then you could come away with a nice looking card and then spend a few more dollars to get it slabbed.

I’ve seen a few unopened Sweet Capital packs go for sale at auctions. Always wondered if the winner did actually open the pack and find a card, haven’t seen anything yet…
