George Gibson Auto question
Hey guys,
Was wondering if George Gibson from the T205 and T206 sets was a hard or easy autograph to find. Couldn't find any examples but thought some of you would probably know. Thanks, Mike.

Mike,
He's one of very few from my neck of the woods. Buried 10 minutes from here. He was a willing signer, but being in Canada, didn't field as many autograph requests as American players would have. Therefore, he's a touch tougher than his contemporaries. But he did sign TTM, in addition to managing later on, so he can be procured. |

George C. Gibson is a relatively common autograph. Especially after the release of Larry Ritter's "Glory Of Their Times" in which a chapter was devoted to Gibson's career. By the accounts of most of those former players featured in the book they received numerous TTM autograph requests. The only player from the book that might be considered "tough" is that of Jimmy Austin who died in 1965 shortly before the release of the book. Have offered at least several Gibson autographs for sale via my e-mail updates in the past year alone, On letters, GPC's 3x5's etc. and sell in the $50.00 to $150.00 price range. Even Austin while tougher than Gibson is neither rare nor expensive.

Keep in mind that Gibson wasn't featured in the original edition of TGOTT. His section was cut, and he passed away a couple of years after the first printing was issued.

Correct "An enlarged edition was issued in 1984, with the additions of George Gibson, Babe Herman, Specs Toporcer, and Hank Greenberg"

I have categorized the 391 subjects in the T206 set into different groupings based on relative scarcity. Among that group of 391, I break the top 100 Common Players (non-HOFers) into 4 quartiles:
1. 25 Easy Commons 2. 25 Tougher Commons 3. 25 Difficult Commons 4. 25 Very Difficult Commons Basically, it will be a challenge for a collector to get all 100, but it is reasonably doable over a several year period. Any common players not in this top 100 will be a struggle to find. I have Gibson listed in Quartile 2 - "25 Tougher Commons." So, not nearly as easy as, say, Fred Snodgrass (Quartile 1), but not as hard as Bill Hinchman (Quartile 3). Here's my signed M101-2 Gibson from the Doc Steen collection.

I completely agree with Paul's categorization for Gibby. With most who fall into Paul's #2 and onward spots, finding something nice/unique/interesting for such players can often present a challenge. Often times, if you can land a 3x5 which presents in a pleasing way, that's where the road ends, unless you're prepared for a lengthy search.
