If we're talking collecting in general, I don't believe I have one. The cards that I really want in my collection are ones all readily available if you have the financial means to acquire them, which I don't.
I suppose if I were really to choose something, a true white whale if you will it would be the Harrsion Studios Postcard of Josh Gibson. I doubt there even is another copy of this card in existence, and I'm pretty sure the only way I would ever own it would be if I suddenly inherited millions of dollars.

My white whale is the 1887 Kalamazoo Pittsburgh team card, and I won't be getting it unless I decide to sell other cards to buy it. I have other cards on my wantlist that are actually in my price range, which I would get before the Kalamazoo card.

I share this white whale, Seven. But to add something new to the thread, this is up there as well... to pair with my signed 49 Bowman Paige.

My White Whale is out there...
There are probably a few of them, and I know one did not sell when offered as Heritage lot #81887 in their May 21, 2021 auction. Maybe the consignor is reading this thread... It's the 1915 Cardinals Team m113. My smaller "off-white" whale would be the Virgil Trucks m114 with the NL Photo caption similar to the one below. Mine is more of a silly rare error card. I need the 1983 Topps Wrong Back with Wade Boggs on the front and Luis Aponte on the back. I have the one with Boggs on the back and Aponte on the front. Would love to get the pair together.

I collect Jersey City Skeeters cards. This is one of my White Whales. The 1915 T214 Victory Tobacco Hooks Wiltse Jersey City team card. I know Leon used to own it a long time ago, but he sold it when he sold his collection through his Heritage auction. I think the current owner is a board member, but I'm not sure who owns it now. I'll never be able to afford it if it becomes available again, but I keep up hope that someday it will reside in my Jersey City team collection.

1930 Baguer Chocolate "Joe McCarthy" in non-beater condition.
I'm not even talking mid-range or high-end, just not beat the hell up. Back stamp still intact without paper loss, front image not a mess, etc... I've had a shot at a few from others and seen some raw on auctions/Ebay/etc over the years, but they've all been beaters. They're not common, but they're not elusively mega-rare. I think I got a good chance at snagging this one day, but not in the past 10-ish years I've been looking one. |

Would love to hear more about this Billy, the entire story of this set is pretty fascinating to me. There are practically zero playing days cards of some of the Negro League greats because of the time they came up. At least with guys like Charleston, there are some issues that people can pursue from his time in Cuba.

Three whales for me would be a w600 Wagner, 1907 Seamless Ty Cobb, and a signed Wilt Chamberlain rookie. I think/hope I'll be able to knock off the first one at some point in time; the other two are going to need some luck.

I guess I'll always be chasing my white whale as I don't know what exists out in the wild. I am always searching for any photos, articles or other memorabilia of my grandfather, Hoyt "Speedy" or "Trooper" Webster, who was a boxer in the Army and fought professionally for a brief time after his discharge.
There is one photo of him that was found in his belongings after his death and another of him and other members of the 1930 Ft. Eustis Boxing team that I ran across on eBay. And a copy of a writeup and sketch of him in the 1930 Army Recruiting News. The search continues.
