I would simply ask what the purpose of his eventual purchase is?
Does he want to land a single great, storied card for his collection (there are a ton of things like Bowman, Red Heart, etc., that are crazy pricey and seriously coveted by collectors), or is he looking at the overall buy as an investment opportunity alone? There doesn't seem to be a ceiling to Mantle cards, so if it's the latter, I'd ignore the more 'common' Mantles (1966 - 1969, save for the '69 White Letter, which is a great blue chip card to have) and grab multiple cards from the 1950's and early/mid 60's and watch their values continually rise.
