That and after my experience getting burned with my altered 54T Mays previously in PSA 8.5, my desire to climb the set registry ladder is greatly reduced, particularly on big cards.
Turns out, you wouldn't have needed the better part of a million clams after all. Meanwhile, the 8 didn't sell at all, and the 6 went for less than any has in a while. Not a good night for Mays rookies.

There were a few items I was interested in l/watching closely and they all met-to-crushed my expectation:

1933 Goudy Lajoie PSA 4.5 closed at $162?!?! Amazing card for sure, but that’s more than double what I expected

T206 Green Cobb Old Mill PSA 4 closed at $69k! Great looking example of a very tough combo, but that’s also almost double what I expected

T206 Magie error PSA 3 closed at $33.6k. It was a great looking example, but a little annoying since my 3, which was very nice in its own right, only brought $29.5k in ML’s spring auction. Considering I have a number of t206s coming up in their summer auction, I am trying to decide if it was condition difference that justifies the extra 10%, or does REA bring better prices on T206 than memory lane. I think it’s a little of both.

1906 W601 Detroit PC with Cobb, PSA A, closed at $11.1k. I figured it go for $10k-$12k, so spot on. Although I think this should be $60k+ item, given it is so super rare and given what the 1915 Red Sox (Ruth) team photo PC sold for…

1915 Red Sox (Ruth) Team Photo Post Card, PSA A, closed for $114k. Another same-graded and similar looking example sold for $75k, in REA, 4 months ago.

The 1914 CJs I was watching closed within range of what I expected - this continues to be a hot set.

It seems to me that higher-end prewar (player, rarity, set) is doing well given last night’s results. Plus, REA is a top-flight AH, so I would expect nothing less.

That Lajoie was really strong, i would have wanted it a lot lower. Has a crease but really nice looking. Congrats to the buyer. That card is legendary but a little gimmicky…is it a 33 or a 34? I still cant decide how badly i want one, not enough i guess…..

The Ruth 25 exhibit and Cobb postcards went cheap relative to recent other auctions I thought, but I didnt try to bid again on those, so maybe that’s more the market than recent other sales? The Ruth 25 went for $30k plus in similar condition recently vs $17k here? One of his cooler images.

I already finished my T3 set, but someone got a pretty good deal on those lots, the images were great with a stamp on the back keeping prices down. Almost started another set! Of course those are expensive to grade.

And that would be me. Good eye appeal T3s with marks and pinholes is my niche. Already finished the T3 set a couple of years ago, and I had them all graded last summer during the PSA special, but I couldn't resist picking up four upgrades, two with alternate backs.

I thought they could be bought right for resale, but I finally have up on the lot of 49 and the lot with backstamps in the extended bidding

I bought the Cobb Bat Off Shoulder PSA 6 for $19.2k (including buyer’s fee). I don’t think it should be a 6 necessarily, but this card sold for $25.2k in the December REA auction. Tough 7 months.

Picked up a bunch of T3s. Prices were mostly high all around but the inventory was solid.

It dropped 20 percent in 7 months? Yikes.

Are most Cobbs down?

Hi Ryan - I know absolutely zero about the details here, but a 10% swing seems like a pretty close range to me. I would be less inclined to expect that there's something material that explains the difference, and more inclined to expect that the vagaries of the auction process, and who was in (or out) of the bidding on those days, what else they were bidding on, and whether they were feeling aggressive or conservative.

Particularly in an auction format like this, the difference has got to be like 2-3 bidding increments, which seems like it's so close that it's probably not worth getting excited about, or even attempting to explain.

Then again, it's a lot easier to be sanguine in these situations when your card is the one that sells for 10% higher, rather than for 10% lower.

Everything I watched seemed to exceed what I expected or was willing to pay. Was very surprised at some of the prices.

I was fortunate to out last the under bidder on that W601 Postcard in the wee hours of the night. W600s and W601s are extremely rare and having the postmark and stamp on the back in my eyes makes it more desirable even though having a blank back in higher grade on it, would most likely fetch more money. Good analogy Ryan on the 1915 Ruth card. I was thinking the 1925 Gehrig exhibit 10 years ago when they could be had in the 5-10k range and now they are 6 figures in most cases.

Half a million seems like a pretty solid part of a cool million to me, and well outside of my threshold for deploying my limited resources.

Hammer on the Bond Bread Jackie Portrait in a 7 was 35K. Based on that, what would a PSA 5.5 expect? Lows 20's maybe?

Srik, congrats on the Uzit! One of my favorite backs, and might even be rarer than Drum.

Seems like T206 printing errors are roaring back, some very robust prices- Criger Front Miscut, Rudolph Upside Down Back, Hummel multi strike, Shaw Ghost, Lash Bitters, even the low-grade Nodgrass. All very strong.

Ryan, IMO it's neither. I feel yours was slightly better condition, although they are both very nice and comparable. I also think ML and REA are both top shelf and bring very similar prices. I think it's just a slight increase in the market. It's a very rare and desirable card, and people who are priced out on Planks go hard on Magie.

Also, a 10% difference isn't that much...if it was 20-30% more, than that would make for an interesting conversation. To me, they are comparable condition, and the auction results feel quite comparable too. Again, I'm thinking there's a slight uptick in the market over the last few months.
