Yeah, two guys, but hard to know how many would have been in the $1,000-$2,000 plus range if those two did not get there first.

I know it is a rare Raiders pennant, but it is such a common design for a football pennant. Price seems crazy.

Agree. Very likely that a few "would be" bids did not even register. Crazy price, but if you're an advanced Raider collector it may represent the only void in your collection.

Default How rare are these?

Hey everyone. So I am cleaning out my parent's old stuff now, and have come across these five vintage baseball pennants. (see pictures)

Trying to determine if any of these are rare / high value. I have done some online research, but not an expert so getting some conflicting information.

San Francisco Giants: I have only seen two pictures of this design online. value was $85 for one and $150 for other.

Baltimore Orioles: Lots of examples with bird batting, but only found one example with the bird pitching like this, and with the stadium. that one was $140ish.

Kansas City Athletics: I cannot find any pictures or examples of this design online. Plenty with a batting elephant, but the elephant is on all fours with bat in his trunk, no examples anthropomorphized in uniform.

Pittsburgh Pirates: This one seems common, but still seeing values from $25 to $100, which is a wide range.

New York Yankees: Only found one example of this style, bat and crown, and it was on an auctioneers site that required signing up to get more information. I know the Yankees are popular, so if unusual this would be worth something.

I figured a specialty forum would have people in the know, who could tell me some more information on these. Trying to figure out how worth it it would be to start an Ebay account and become a seller, just for these five items.

Any advice or knowledge will be most appreciated. Thank You in advance.

None of those pennants are going to make you rich, I don’t think, but they are all beautiful examples from the “golden age” of the 1960’s. I collect Giants stuff and can tell you the Giant on the bridge is not rare. I think $85 is more realistic than $150. All your pennants were made by Trench and marketed by Sports Specialties. See the “baseball” on all of them? That’s actually an SS for Sports Specialties. All your pennants look to be in great shape and have great color. I don’t think I’ve seen the A’s or Orioles before. Those MIGHT be more rare than the Giants. I really don’t know. Just guessing, I think all are 100ish dollar pennants.

Both supply and demand for vintage pennants is relatively low, certainly too low to establish reliable “market values”. If I had to estimate an “over/under” for each, in an eBay auction, I’d say $35 Pirates, $40 Orioles, $45 Giants, $75 Yankees, $90 Athletics. Large margin of error for each.

If you listed “for sale” and didn’t mind waiting, you could eventually get a little more for each, including $125-150 for the Athletics. That’s a great looking pennant.

Are the pennants full size?

Yes, but...how many times have we seen "crazy" prices become the new normal for something? Maybe this will draw out another one and we can get a better idea.

I know someone that was going to snipe $2500 but never got the chance because the price shot past that number before he could submit. So the next one would potentially sell for that. If I'm shelling out $2K+ I want it to be for something I've never seen before...or maybe just once. Otherwise, I'll lie in wait for someone to make a mistake...like so many others do these days.

Sometimes you have to walk away, and there can be great strength in that.

Default seems pretty steep

I've been looking for one of these, but the price seems very high. Is this really the going rate for one of these?

Do not pay that amount. I got mine for $400 (in equally nice condition) about a decade ago. It might be worth up to $600 or so these days, and I personally would wait for another one to come along. They are pretty rare, but 3 - 4 of them will typically surface in a year's time.

Best of luck!

Paul,

I just sold the pennant I had a few weekends ago at a show in Detroit to a dealer. I let mine go for $450 which is know is a little low, but I also knew the guy buying it so I cut him a deal.
