Shown before but this is hanging behind my home office desk and sort of on topic. Sorry for the glare from my outside window. Lou was ahead of Ruth in home runs near the half-way point, as the poster says.

This is a page from one of my scrapbooks; opening day 1928 after the Ruth & Gehrig home run barrage of the year before.

Who knows what other monumental occurrence of baseball history took place in the same game?

I know what it is, and it is monumental. But rather than spoil the party, let's see if anyone else knows.

It was Walter Johnson's last game before he retired from major league baseball.

Yes, WaJo pinch-hit for Tom Zachary, who had given up Ruth's 60th HR, and flied out to Ruth for his last appearance in a ML game. How's that for full circle?

I wasn't aware of all of those events happening in one incredible sounding game!
My question is if Johnson had pre-planned for this to be his final game before realizing it would very well be the same day of Ruth's 60th, or if he came to this decision closer to when that information would have been on the radar. "If Babe does it, I'll quit then, as a nice way to cap off two things at once!" Last edited by BillyCoxDodgers3B; 06-27-2025 at 08:57 AM. |
