Hi all,
A fellow I’ve recently connected with has inherited his great-grandfather’s tobacco card collection, which is on the order of hundreds of sports and non-sport cards. He recently shared some highlights of this collection on Reddit (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3) and would like to grade/sell some of the higher value pieces, as he isn’t a collector himself. One card in this collection is an E94 George Close Jimmy Austin with an Oppie Dildock overprint, which I've informed him is quite a scarce card. The card will eventually be graded and sold, but he’d like to be more informed about the premium that overprints command so he can price it appropriately when selling it. I offered to share the card here on his behalf so that he could receive some insight from collectors far more knowledgeable on this topic than myself. If anyone here has acquired a similarly scarce E94 overprint recently, what value did you place on the card you acquired, and how did you arrive at this number with the limited data available? Or, due to the lack of recent sales, would the wiser move be to consider the card a “let the bidders fight over it” card and instead auction it through a reputable company once it’s graded/authenticated? Any insight or advice that the folks here can offer is greatly appreciated. Just trying to help prevent someone from selling himself short on a very neat card. Thanks all. (This E94 research post should also be updated to include this new discovery.) Edit: he informed me that he sold the card raw to someone who had offered $2000. I guess that answers it.

Hunt Auctions has sold several E94s with overprints within the past year. Prices have been up too. I'd estimate even in lower grade it should bring about $2,000.

Thanks for the response, I'll add Hunt to the list of sources I check. Glad to hear he received a fair amount for the card in that case.
