Earlier this month I finished my 1971 Topps Baseball Coin set. Now, since I'm reliving my collecting childhood days 1970-1975, I've started collecting Topps Football from 1970 and 1971 in lesser condition. When those are done, I'd like to do a 1-263 run of the 1972 Football. One day, I'll work on the basketball sets for 1970, 71, and 72.

Happy collecting!

I am down to 29 cards in my 1952 Topps set. I am focusing on centering and new certifications. I put a complete set together 8 years ago with an average grade of 6.5. This new set will average out at about 5.5 and will far surpass my old set. Those PSA grading standards are tough these days.

John, it is crazy. I need three high numbers and 26 low numbers. Most of the low numbers are from 80-270.

That is crazy...good luck as you finish, outstanding accomplishment! I've toyed with the idea for years and never had the nerves to do it.

Default 1964 Topps Baseball

Got the last card for my 1964 Topps Baseball set. Not a real hard set to finish although the last card took a month to arrive after purchasing it. Now onto the 1965 set which I'll hopefully finish soon.

My currently goal is plowing through the 1939 Play Ball set
I tend to do things orderly, as in nine pocket sheet by nine pocket. I complete one page, then move on to the next. I'm now seven pages complete except for the DiMaggio towards the 13 pages needed for the low numbers. Luckily there are only a couple HOFers in my way, Paul Warner, Chuck Klein and Earl Averill. I may need to hold off on the Ted Williams rookie for a bit, but the rest of the set i anticipate having done before Christmas

I'm working on the 64 set as well. Wanted to get a Mantle or Rose at the National but those prices were all over the place (saw a Raw Mantle with an asking price of $900!!!) so I decided to go after others in the set.

Today, I purchased the last card I needed to complete my vg-ex 1971 Topps Football set, #245 Joe Greene from eBay. Yesterday, I also bought the 71 Topps Football poster set as well, I have a group of 1970 Topps Football cards arriving later today, which will put me withing striking distance of completing that set as well.

Next to work on:

Finish the 1967 Topps Baseball poster set
Upgrade the 1969 Topps Deckle and 1970 Scratch Off sets
Purchase/Trade for a 1971 Topps Scratch Off set complete, and if possible, the 1971 Football playing card set
Purchase/Trade for a 1972 Topps Football 1-263 run in vg to vg-ex condition

Let's see what happens. Happy collecting!

A few days ago the mail brought a large lot of 1979 Hostess panels that included the Dale Murphy / Jon Matlack / Bruce Bochte panel that I needed to complete my run of all 250 panels Hostess printed from 1975-1979.

Unlike completing vintage Bowman and Topps sets this endeavor was more than just how much money did I want to spend. Some of these are difficult to find.

I took on this project when I found my shoebox of the panels I had from the 1970s when my mom brought boxes home. 5.5 years later I’m thrilled to be done.

Thanks Zach.

I went back through the old want lists on my computer and found these were last ones I obtained.

The 1979 Murphy/Matlack/Bochte panel was by far the hardest. There have only been a few hit eBay in the last year and all went for over $200.

The next two hardest were ones I quickly jumped on Buy It Now offers for $99 earlier this year

1976 - 31/32/33 Danny Darwin / Fritz Peterson / Rod Carew

1978 - 145/146/147 - Lyman Bostock / Gary Carter / Ron Blomberg

The other one my last four I got for $40

1975 - 85/86/87 Dave Kingman/ Ed Herrmann / Ralph Garr.

The fivew before that were all in the $40 - $45 range

1975 Dwight Evans / Ken Holtzman / Cesar Cedeno

1976 - 34/35/36 Carlos May / Tom Seaver / Brooks Robinson

1976 - Johnny Bench / Luis Tiant / Dwight Evans

1978 - 28/29/30 Bob Watson / Bob Boone / Reggie Smith - This was only $17 - with a Bob Boone autograph?

1979 - 97/98/99 Jim Sundberg / Bob Horner / Ruppert Jones

I finished the 1977 set long before the other years.

I'm sure there are a few harder ones I acquired long ago - whether at a show in the 70's or 80's or off eBay. And I could probably have acquired a few of my last four cheaper if I had been willing to spend. For the longest time I didn't want to go over $25 or $30.

I've elected to store mine in one pocket pages, with four panels (two each direction) per page. I lay the binder flat on my shelf.

The lot I recentlly acquired came in a binder with all the panels in three pocket sheets. All the panels were cut right down to the line.

The panels I collected as a kid, had much larger cuts - the only ones we cut on the lines were from Ho Ho boxes because the lines were right on the box edges. I decided not to cut down all the ones I had an many of the one I purchased were also outside the lines.
