I looked it up and he played for Ciudad Trujillo in the Dominican League in 1937. He was born in 1911.

It’s an amazing piece. Hank, I brought it to the trade event last year, but you did not attend. I can bring it again this year if you want. It’s beautiful in person.

Love seeing all of these Gibson pieces.
That 1937 Ciudad Trujillo photo has always been one of my favorites. Here is an early image of Gibson along with his 1928 Pittsburgh Crawfords team. Gibson is 5th from the left. This image was used by Graig Kreindler for the painting that was the basis for this poster and card. The poster includes Gibson in nine of uniforms arranged chronologically from 1928 through 1944. Ryan's Ciudad Trujillo and Jeremy's Concordio images were used for the poster as well. Last edited by Baseball Rarities; 08-05-2025 at 05:08 PM. |

According to Wiki, he was with the Crawfords 1932-36, which seems more likely since he'd have been 16 if this was the 1928 team. Sure this is Gibson in your photo?

Here is another photo from Tinker's collection that was taken at the same time. Tinker has identified all of the players on the back. Gibson is in the front row, on the far left. |

According to Wiki: "Shortly thereafter, he [Gibson] was recruited by the Pittsburgh Crawfords, which in 1928 were still a semi-professional team." When Wiki says 1932-36 it's referring to when the Pittsburgh Crawfords were professional.

What a great bunch of Gibson items. Here's my 1934 Concordia (Venezuela) team photo (3.25X5.75) with Gibson, Martin Dihigo, Rap Dixon & others.
I believe the team was in the Dominican playing a tournament. |
