Somebody posted these photos on facebook. The person was looking for advice about them. I'm sure that some people were trying to buy they behind the scenes, but most people were telling the person who posted them that they might have something worth a lot of $$, which was nice to see. A few people were saying they were fake/modern (of course). I'm certainly no expert, but I would not just give those away without an expert opinion.

From my understanding, this group of photos belonged to Amos Strunk personal scrapbook. Taken in 1919 during Red Sox spring training. This group and others from this set (not seen) later sold at varies AHs over the years. I personally own the Hooper and Pennock photo in this group.
It is possible potentially that these photos had extras and were given out to teammates. On the other hand, they could be fake. With the pics provided and not having it in hand...makes it a little hard to tell. Here's the Wally Schang https://rmyauctions.com/bids/bidplace?itemid=20022 And article about the find... https://www.sportscollectorsdaily.com/70096-2/ Last edited by GoCubsGo32; 09-12-2025 at 07:03 AM. |

I just saw the post on Facebook. They look very good to me, I think the simple guess is probably right in this case. Photos taken by a team member with multiples created for other team members and the like (their families as well as just extras). It would be nice to see some angled photos outside of the plastic though, 1919 these should have some silvering to them if they're double weight. But they may not be, hard to tell.
Here is the link, not sure if it will work. Facebook really sucks at sharing posts. https://www.facebook.com/share/p/17FJrNLTmt/

Thanks for sharing the link Lucas! I see the additional pictures. Very interesting! Def mix feelings on these. There's high res images of these out there, so def very easy to make modern copies as well.
Correct David, I agree. If they are original the photos most likely had the white boarder, than later trimmed. Which is not uncommon. Looking forward to see how this plays out! Would be exciting if they end up being real. |

One thing I've noticed about the borders of photos is generally a glossy finished photo has a border, while double weight generally have no border, I know this isn't always true by any means, but I think these weren't trimmed and are in original shape. I've especially noticed this in snapshots that predate 1925ish. The further back you go, the less snapshots have a border. By 1919 I am sure at the photo finishers you would've had a choice between the two or of getting both. Though I would go with your opinion over almost anybody else Gary.

Thanks. I didn't think so, but it does bear some resemblance, no?

Too hard for me to tell from the pictures posted. They could be real but also look a little fuzzy. That could just be the scan though...

I offered to discuss the photos with her but she never reached out. That being said, I’m sure she was being blasted with DM’s. Looks like post is gone now, unless I’m just not seeing it for whatever reason. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
