I've collected chess player cards (not chess themed cards) for years and have been sharing my cards and knowledge of my little niche in the hobby. People usually want a Magnus Carlsen or Bobby Fischer card but there is a lot more out there. I built a catalogue to help collector's figure things out.
https://chessplayercards.blogspot.com/ Here's what seems to be Kasparov's rookie. 1983-1987 Pliva. |

Thanks, its one of my favorites. I've tried to collect all the World Champions and many of the other greats.

How did you find that card? It's got to be one of a kind or close to it.

Pliva Pharmacies produced these sets in candy packs. One card per pack with set runs of over 80 cards. They changed the sets every year for 5 years or so. This was in former Yugoslavia, Belgrade 1983-87. So one year during that time they printed these cards. The runs would have been small. The cards are scarce but its not the only one out there.

Here's an Alekhine RC. He has a few different 1927 options.

Wow! That reminds me...I play the Alekhine defense more often than I should. It usually doesn't work out well for me.

I was wondering when Mr. Spaeth was going to show up and bring the chess heat. What else have you been hiding!?

LOL nothing I haven't probably posted before. Here's a favorite, a Victoria Vedetten Parade Fischer in really nice shape for the issue, back in the day I was fortunate to make the acquaintance of a guy in Belgium who had many from this multi series set in great condition.

And here is a phone card of Judit Polgar, only one I've ever seen.

Does the Vedetten have the chocolate silver protectors removed? I've enever seen a Fischer with a clean back.
The Polgar has a calendar card version of the phone card. I put all the info up in the catalogue of chess player cards. |

Clean, that's what's amazing about it.

That is amazing. What a find!
Here's the Polgar. Is there any other sport/game where a woman has competed at the highest level like Juidt? Ranked 8th in the world! I thought it was only phone cards but they made 200 of these in Hungary. |

I think women win the Iditarod and other sled races. Then there's Danica Patrick.
Just checked the Fischer, perfectly clean, maybe I'll grade it someday.

One of the toughest of the champions rookie cards. 1926 Spalding Champions Emanuel Lasker. This is the blank back.

This is probably much more to do with the photography collectors than the chess subject matter, but thought this was interesting. I’ve seen some stereotypes land CDVs of Morphy get into low 4 figures but nothing like this.

The Karpov and Spassky svijets are great images. The earliest I've found are these Swedish cards from 1978-79.

It would be fun to try to get the full World Chess Champion rookie list together.
1. 1888 Goodwin Champions Steinitz. 2. 1926 Spalding Champions Lasker 3. 1924 Aguilitas/1924 Gallaher Champions Capablanca 4. 1927 Die welt in Bildern Alekhine (among other 1927's) 5. 1936 Red Band Euwe (among other Dutch 1936 issues) 6. 1962 Diez Mandamientos Botvinnik 7. 1964 Smyslov/Tal/Petrosian MBX 8. 1978-79 Rockaden Spassky 9. 1963 Ktav Fiacher 10. 1978-79 Rockaden Karpov 11. 1983-87 Pliva (Kasparov - up for debate) After that it gets complicated. Probably easiest to say Vishy,Kramnik and Magnus all appear in 2012 FaceChess since any other cards are very tough to find. Ding and Gukesh are also tough to decide. Maybe FaceChess maybe SLCC. It's been impossible to find 2012 FaceChess for many years. I recall when I first became aware of them, they didn't seem hard to find on ebay or COMC, I even bought a couple of extra Carlsens which I ended up giving away to people years ago.

PSA has graded all of 3 Carlsens. Do you have any insight into why these are so impossible now to find?

Like you I'm not sure. Especially since demand is clearly there. I'm certain it would sell well if auctioned even on ebay without much promotion. Maybe if we ever see Topps Chrome Chess they might come out of the woodwork from people looking through their old boxes from 2012? Or they were never taken seriously even by collectors like yourself back then and have been trashed in large numbers. The 2003 on card auto Hikarus are similarly difficult to come by.

Like Peter, back in the day, I had two extra FaceChess Carlsen's and gave them both away thinking I could always get more if needed. With Covid, I liquidated most of my collection, including my last Carlsen. Haven't been able to find one since. The same "commons" from the set have been on ebay for years.
I would be very interested to see the price if one came up for auction - almost nothing would surprise me as far as sale price (low or high). I'm not sure if it seems so in demand because there are a large number of people who recognize and want the card now or just because I pay attention to the few times the card is brought up in discussion. |

The Ktav has always sold well. Here's the full range of variations. The typical. The "Dark" Fischer and the truly rare perforated.

I have been a poker player ever since the poker boom that happened following amateur Chris Moneymaker's 2003 Main Event upset. Women do occasionally win open tournaments at the World Series of Poker and female pros like Vanessa Selbst and Kristen Foxen have over $10 million in career tournament earnings. This year, female Leo Margets became the first women to make the final table at poker's Main Event in nearly 40 years.

I am loving this thread. I know almost nothing about chess, but it is great to see some new cards and learn about what is rare or impossible to find.
Great cards and information, everyone.

Any players you would like to see let me know. I'll dig up some scans. Here's the 3 rookies from the 1964 Matchbox labels. Sadly, with the war they've become near impossible to get. For a long time I thought Botvinnik's card from this set was also his rookie but I found an absurdly rare card from 1962.

Not a difficult card, but probably my favorite aesthetically.
