I agree with you in that I think many people likely misread DiMaggio's personality for surliness, etc. Some folks are simply not great dealing with other people at large. There could be many reasons for this. It can't be easy on someone if they carry this trait and also happen to be one of the more famous individuals on the planet.
The children's hospital was near and dear to his heart. While I didn't share in your good fortune to meet him in such a setting, accounts that I have read have confirmed your experience. You found him in the one public place where he was perhaps most comfortable. I never had the pleasure of meeting Joe's MLB brothers, but I've heard that Dom was decent and Vince was the nicest.
