Newbies will be afraid to post or ask questions

Hi All,

I hope it's just cabin fever or something, but I have noticed that the Newbies have been getting rapped on the knuckles for a lot of posts.

Their told they are off base for not having use the search function or asking something that's OT.

I myself have gone thru the archives and have use the search function and have end up with a ton of info to go thru, and 3/4 of it is of no help, so I gave up half way thru. And never find out the answer I was looking for.

But by doing this searching and going thru the whole archives, I have found a lot of OT subjects, that were started or carried on by the ones who of lately have been screaming foul, the loadest.

Right now I myself am realy afraid of asking any more questions on the open forum, and will search for someone on the forum I think can help me and contact them personaly by email, and if they answer their answer.

I think the reaction of the members on the forum will be scaring any new vintage card collector away, and back to all the modern cards coming out and a lost to the continuing on of hobby of vintage card collecting in general.

I will step down off the soap box now, and go back into hiding, before all the hit men arrive in town.

ok, i still have a question...

i have been trying to find pics of the e90-1 set. or most of it...

but i can't get the caramel-card "open gallery" to load.

1. is it me, or is the site having trouble?
2. is there anywhere else where i can view most of the e90-1 set?

Peter Calderon should be able to help you with scans if you contact him. The link to the gallery doesn't seem to be working as of right now. BTW, I haven't experienced too many problems with asking questions here. The members that do answer are pretty helpful.

The search is a great option but sometimes the title of the topic is not detailed enough to bring up the answer to your question. Sure if you have a question on the E90-1 set searching E90-1 is an obvious.

But if you have a more general question for example how did you start collecting etc. the search may not help you. I agree some of the shots against the newer posters are a little rough. Many of the “Hit Men” are very guilty of cluttering up the archives with posts that contain the phrase O/T. Here’s an idea....don’t slap around a new member for asking a question about cards that may have been asked already, especially when you have posted anything about what movies you watched this past weekend!

Lee don’t be afraid to post there’s plenty of room for baseball card related questions regardless if they have been asked in the past.

One trick about the search feature is that you should use a "+" before words that you want to find in threads.

For example: +e93 +Chase. This will return only posts with both "e93" and "chase" in them.

e93 chase (no plus signs) will return all posts with "e93" or "chase" (or both).

Re: newbies... this is a 2-way street. This isn't a Q&A or appraisal forum - people should do some homework before posting. But everyone starts from scratch and I'd agree that new posters sometimes don't get the friendliest welcomes.

...or state an opinion. I just always think that the moderator is going to delete my posts! I have no idea why but my first post ever here was deleted by the moderator. It wasn't anything bad either. I had just started a thread about Dick Towle (from "Gone with the Stain") selling PSA graded T202's with stains on eBay. I just thought it was funny that a guy who makes a living from removing stains from cards would be selling stained cards on eBay. He was also selling some other crazy stuff, like PS2 video games and ammuniton. The moderator deleted it within 2 minutes afterwards. I still don't know why!

The number of posts of mine that have been deleted by Bill just about equals the number of e-mails I have sent to John Wonkaticket without an answer.. Hi John. Hello Bill.
And thanks for the tip on the "search posts" feature--I usually have pretty good luck with it.

Someone recently started a thread about "how did you get started collecting?" Some newbies (mind of I calll them "new people"?) answered interestingly and enthusiatically, but most of us didn't, because we'd already posted three-four times on the same subject. HOWEVER, as I said, there are ALWAYS new people coming around (and I don't think we scare them away!), and so such a thread is always appropriate. Ditto for "favorite set," "favorite card" "favorite player" etc.

A "NEWBIE" to this board is more than likely not a "NEWBIE" in life or even in collecting old cardboard. Two rules good rule in business, life, whatever are:

1)Take nothing personally.
2)Nothing is personal.

I for one am relatively new to this board and have been greeted with the occasional sarcastic remark but mostly I have been well received. I am thankful to all the people who make this board GREAT and have a similar passion for cards. I know many great collector's of the old stuff who have no idea a forum like this exist and they have never been to a National, or even a card show. One gentleman, a patient of mine, is 92 years old and has one of the most awesome collection of cards I have ever witnessed(he's collected for over 85 years). The great thing about him is that he has never paid over $1 for any of his cards--He quit buying in 1970 after he realized they longer made mickey mantle cards. My point is that there are more "serious" card people out there other than this board as there are more vintage cards out there than are in our collections or for sale.

When a veteran of this board gives a sarcastic or OT answer I don't take it personally nor do I believe it's meant to be personal. It's like I'm an intern again and my upper levels are ensuring I'm serious about what I'm doing. Even though I'm far from being an intern in collecting vintage (i've been doing so for 29 years) I am a rookie on this board and I have the utmost respect for its founders and veterans.

I myself have been well treat by the forum, but have been getting a little gun shy, in the past week and a half, the way the posting have been going.

I was just calling it the way I was seeing it, there were more streaks called than balls. And after some one or one team streaks out to much they think they are jinxed.

OK now for a question, yes I know I said I wasn't going to any more, but......, if I'm reseaching the PCL, "right I'm can't think of anything pacific I would like to right not, so please make some thing up. How would you word the search?

Lee if you streak too much you might be called nuts,but we just call them as we see them.We dont want to see why(or what) they call you little lee,trust me. So no streaking please,this is a family oriented board

PS: The teacher alway told us to look up the words in the dictionary, when we couldn't spell them. I could never find the word for doctor, under the Fs. <gg>
