I will offer a trivia question that I do know the answer for:

What MLB outfielder made it to the HOF without appearing in a game?

From the wording - it is certainly a trick question.

This is not a trick question. What three pitchers won 30 or more games for the same team in a season, if any?




And the trick is that he made the HOF in a different sport, and never got off the bench in baseball.

I found a few teams that had a 40-game winner AND a 30-game winner...

He played (p) for the Brown's in the 20's and is a charter member of the Football HOF (I think).

Yes, Sharman:

Bill Sharman
Born: 1926
OF Minor League Star.


Sharman was an All America basketball star at Southern California and played 11 years in the NBA, sharing the Boston Celtics' backcourt with Bob Cousy. He averaged 17.8 points for his career. In 1975 he was elected to the National Basketball Hall of Fame. The Dodgers signed him as an outfielder in 1950. He hit .292 for St. Paul (American Association) in 1952 and .294 for the same club in 1955. Brought up by Brooklyn in September 1955, he became the only man to be thrown out of a ML game without ever playing in one, when one day the whole bench was ejected by the umpire. When the Dodgers did not offer him a ML contract, he quit baseball to concentrate on basketball.

Nope. That is wrong. He teamed up with McGinnity in '03 and '04. But that is "only" two 30 game winners. Maybe it never happened.

and never saw a team on which there were 3.

Checking the major league leaders for 1884 at http://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/ML_1884_t.shtml, I saw Taylor, Sweeney and McCormick each winning more than 30 games that year for TOT. Ahah--an answer. Unfortunatly, TOT didn't stand for Toledo Tornados or any other team, but stands for "total" as these players played for more than one team in the year.

Lets put this into perspective - if there were 3 x 30 game winners on one club then those three pitchers would have basically accounted for all of the teams wins. We know that most teams played schedules of around 140 - 154 games when most 30 game winners pitched. 90 wins from three pitchers would have been a lot of wins. The first group of 3 x 20 game winners was on Cincinnatti in 1884. First instance of 2 x 30 + 1 x 20 = Chicago, 1886. I couldn't locate a team w/ 3 x 30.

Well there have been 4 x 20 game winners. The 1920 white sox and the 1971 Orioles were two of them. Were there more?

There were two 40+ game winners on the same team, the same year. They were Maroons, but they were TOT: Billy Taylor + Charlie Sweeny - 1884.

Sometimes us old folk just ramble on .... long after they stop listening ..... even after they have walked away.
