Why do people hide behind a screen name

Much like the bands that chose the names of "Lynyrd Skynyrd" or "Jethro Tull", I too have chosen the anonymous alter-ego of "David Vargha". As many people are well aware of, David Vargha was a one-armed, dyslexic, midget, gay, black man who was a member of the Nation of Islam. He lived a short, tumultuous life and was despised by most of the people who knew him. He serves as a sort of inspiration to me.
