I remember the first prewar card I got in a trade. It was a Goudey which I obtained from Bob Donaldson which I passed on to Dan Austin, in a short time frame. What was special about this card was that it had no problems.

There was no writing on it,
no paper loss,
no glue, no tape nor other residue,
no dents, dings, abrasions, tears nor other problems.

There were no problems at all. Yes, it was worn. It had a loss in surface gloss, the corners exhibited rounding consistent with its grade, but that is it.

I recognized it for what it was. It was the ideal card for its grade, because there was nothing wrong with it.

No explanations, excuses, caveats, possible ways to fix the whatevers, nothing.

Thank you, Bob Donaldson! It was real hard to part with, especially so soon.

My question is: would you prefer a card which had top gloss and surfaces and corners, etc. and a problem.

Or

One with good honest wear (only) for the grade?

If I can have good surfaces and corners but a crease (even a heavy one) that doesn't detract from the image then I would take that.

Otherwise I'll take good honest wear over paper loss, writing, glue, or tears on an otherwise great looking card.

When I shave in the mornings now, I am careful to make sure that my image in the mirror is no worse than 60/40 lest my PSA rating will skew my performance all day.

Gil,

If the problem was minor and on the back of the card or very unnoticeable on the front of the card I'd take the card with the flaw as long as it presented itself well.

Good honest wear is fine but overall appearance works for me. I've got a PSA1 '34 Goudey that looks Ex/Mt from a distance but upon closer inspection there is a small tear on the card which is hard to notice.

I guess to answer the question I'd have to say that I'd need to see the card before making that judgement.
