Guys,

There's an East Coast bias to this board. Maybe it's just my imagination or maybe all the hard-core collectors are on the East Coast. However, I'm trying to pull together a West Coast get-together in San Francisco. Maybe a few of us can get together in a month or two in San Francisco. Any of you have an idea for a date or place.

Just remember that the best Irish restaurants and pubs are in San Francisco. If that doesn't sell you on the idea, nothing will. It'll be lots of fun, we can bull**** about our collection and baseball over dinner.

July 1, isn't bad but it's a Sunday night. I have to go to work on Monday. Also it's a short work week because of 4th of July. Would you rather go to an Irish restaurant or an Italian restaurant.

For a relatively high quality restaurant it is reasonably priced, you can't ask for more. For a bunch of hardcore collectors like us there probably couldn't be a better setting. How does June 30, 2007 look for people.

As for travel: SanFran 6/30 to 7/3 visiting my oldest son and his girlfriend. Then up to Blachly, Oregon to visit my daughter and her boyfriend. I'll be in Portland 7/6 and 7/7. Anyone want to start a dinner thread?

8/3 and 8/4 to the National. (I am really bummed that the dinner there was changed to Thursday but I don't hold it against you boss.)

9/3 to 9/8 to Vegas. Anyone want to start a dinner thread?

Lefty's is cool but a "fairly high class" restaurant?

it's a cafeteria with photos all over the wall.
By San Francisco terms the class factor would be about a 2.8 on a scale of 10.
The corn beef and brisket is good but's no high end restaurant by any means.
It is a card collectors kind of atmosphere for certain.

BcD is right about Lefty's, not high class but the right atmosphere for the crowd. Personally, I don't care for the food there. In the city, my favorite places are Cafe Sport which makes a garlic pasta that will leave your breath reeking for days no matter how much you brush and gargle Schroeder's (great German food) and in Oakland/Emeryville, The Gingerbread House (awesome cajun and creole food). Best burger joint is Hot N Hunky.

There is another restaurant next door to Cafe Sport, I think Leaning Tower of Piza, that has a nice vintage baseball display and some awesome osso bucco

I hate to suddenly chime in on something so inconsequential as this, but by being an occassional lurker, I guess it's sort of my role here, by default. In 'N' Out is great, of course, but in my opinion, Fat Apples in Berkeley makes the meanest burger in the Bay- a bold statement that is near-blasphamous to even THINK, here, in Califorinia. I dunno, maybe it's just the naturally subversive attitute already present in the Berkeley air that makes there burgers seem so good, or it could also be the nostalgic feeling I get from Fat Apples' Jack London theme.....perhaps it's a little bit of both.

We still have a ways to go before June 30, 2007. Probably around June 15, 2007 I'll ask for confirmations. Right now I'm leaning towards having our dinner at Lefty's at 7:00 on June 30. Although the Stinking Rose is a good restaurant and only down the block from where I work, it is relatively small in size. Lefty's is more fitting and it's been a while since I looked at the photos on display.

In and Out can't be beat for a fast food burger. I wish they were here in MN. Hot N Hunky is not a fast food burger. The variety is great. My faves are the Italian Stallion and Pastrami burger. I forget the name of the burger with blue cheese on it, but that's real good too.

The ultimate greasy spoon Chinese in SF is Sam Wo's. Dirty cheap and you get a ton of food. They won't give you a fork until they are done making fun of you mercilessly and the only drink they have is tea, but they allow you bring your drinks in.

When I threw raves in SF, we used to finish up the night at Sam's and they would let us keep a pony keg of beer there for us until we got there.

For desert, the Toy Boat Cafe near Japantown is really good and has great collection of vintage toys.

You actually went to Sam Wo's before, that's the only place in Chinatown that is open until real late on a weekday night nowadays. The last time I checked their open until 4:00 a.m.

At one time they had the famous kissing waiter. Of course, he would only kiss the pretty ladies...but he's gone to that big restaurant in the sky.

I wouldn't dare go to a Rave, I look too much like a NARC. I wouldn't want to get tossed out.

Yup, Sam's has always been open until 4am, which was perfect for us Klub Kids, and it is closed on Mondays. My roommates and I used to eat there at least 2-3 times a week. Nothing like a lot of good food real cheap. The 5 of us could got there and eat for less than $20 total and take food home.

Man, it sucks living in bumfuq, MN. There aren't decent restaurants within 100 miles of here

you know the "Nam King" close to Vesuvio's and City Light books is the best chinese place in Chinatown! That's why you never see Americans in there as it's advertised in every foreign tourist brochure in the World!

There is a really good Greek/Mediteranian restaurant in the port of Oakland, but I can't think of the name of it right off hand. They have belly dancers that perform while you eat

Hot N' Hunky is much better than Clown Alley and it is also come as you are. Only time I ever ate at Clown Alley was late night because Hot N' Hunky was closed and really wanted a burger. It's only a few blocks away from Sam Wo's and I'd much rather eat there.

you pick up a hot wet tray that just came out of a dishwasher and slide it along an aluminum bar and tell the guy how you want your pastrami or beef brisket sandwich, you pay then sit down open the plastic jar of grey Poupon and slather your sandwich while looking at the 8 x 12 of Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe on the chipped wood wall above you. Stay away from the salad (its not Fresh Choice), the waitress who looks like a Russian shot putter with and extra chromosome and the Chihuahua named Carlos who has some kind of skin disease and is totally blind who sits out front with the guy with Aids who pan handles there between 3pm and 7 daily~
And the glass served flat Pepsi.~ avoid!

Kind of a local's place down an alley on the wharf. Very old - been there since the early 60's. A little pricey and their crabcakes are to die for.

Aha, so that's what happened to Dimaggio's it's relocated. Now it's actually closer to work. I'm going to drop by for lunch and I'll report back to the forum on my findings.
