Has anyone ever seen any packaging for Just So Tobacco? How many board members have one? How many are known? I upgraded mine to this one several years ago, from Tik, at a National. I think Keith O has some? as I know he bought the one from me on ebay, after I upgraded, about 5-6 yrs ago.....

Leon- the one you have is from the group of six I auctioned in 1998. And of course the original group had seven.

The one I didn't get was D.T. Young. I think my consignor kept the best one.

We recall several articles in the early 1970's hobby publications on this series.
If and when we locate them, we will send a scan to the Board.

We also recall two major finds; one from a local Cleveland collector who
sold his cards through a young Chicago dealer named Billy Mastro
and another large group which Barry Sloate auctioned...we can not recall
the date, but all one of the Sloate auction cards were sold to a single
collector, in California, (we think)

We have two examples in our private collection including a PSA 6
the highest grade ever issued for a Just So.

Mine has a little bit of pencil writing on the back...I forgot to erase it and get my 40 it deserves.....but it really makes no difference to me. This is an absolutely beautiful series imo.....and yes, I am biased....

Just my personal opinion, and no disrespect toward Leon's fine card is intended, but I'd take that Cy Young in a heartbeat over the Four Base Hits Kelly.

I've got a question for Corey about the Young. Years ago, I saw an ad in the SCD classifieds for a card that was advertised as an 1890s era Cy Young rookie card. No price was given, and the ad said something like "serious inquiries only." At the time, I don't believe the Just So Young was catalogued. I've always doubted the legitimacy of the ad, and didn't even bother to contact the seller. But I wonder if Corey can shed some light on whether that ad was placed by a prior owner of the Just So Young. Just curious.

I believe this is the only known copy of this card. Just So cards are extremely rare type cards in general. The Cy Young was presumed to exist for a while since all the players in the set are from Cleveland, but the Young was uncatalogued until the late 80's I believe. Someone can probably fine tune the details here.

The Young surfaced in the late '80's. To that point, while theorized to exist, the card was uncatalogued. It was part of a find of seven Just So's, the other six Barry Sloate auctioned some years ago. The cards surfaced in the Atlanta area, from a family that (not surprisingly) traced its roots to Cleveland. In regard to whether at one time the family ran an ad for the card, this is the first I've heard of it. I do know that when the cards first surfaced the find was featured in the SCD, so perhaps that is what is being referred to. But in any event I am not aware of the cards ever having been advertised for sale.

I bought my " Dancing Woman " Just SO in an antique shop outside of Cleveland for $5 . Sold it recently on Ebay . I go back every few weeks on the off chance another shows up .

Since no one took a stab at answering the questions, as we are all so mesmerizied by the Young, I will guess there are about about 5-7 board members that have one/some. I will guess no kind of packaging has been found to date and there are 15-20 cards in existence. ...regards

Corey--Is it just the scan or was the "D" in "Cleveland" on Young's chest added onto the negative later? It appears not to be consistent with the jersey's creasing.

I thing the "D" too is fine. Most of it is under his armpit. The crease on the sleeve is an illusory effect "creating" part of a "D".

Corey, thanks for responding to my question about the ad in SCD. My recollection is a little fuzzy, but I think I saw that ad in the mid 1990s, so my guess would be that it was a scam unrelated to your card.
