What an awesome collection! (and I see a familiar one or two

merrill-
is it "whu" as in (the way i say) what, or "wha" as in doo-wa-diddy? i would think that the latter would be THE correct french or canandian pronunciation, which would also require accenting the final syllable, as well... (Lazjwah). i'd assume that the americanized version (Lazjuwey) is such because of the way american language treats "ie" as a suffix

I also believe you can actually hear him announced and speak during the 1939 Hall of Fame opening on the following CD: http://www.sportsauthority.com/produ...LAID=116124401

Hey Guys,
It's like doo-wa-diddy Only if you come from the Bronx like I do, you might think it sound like wut. Last edited by Merrillstoys; 05-08-2009 at 03:45 PM. |

Great cowabunga!!! What an array!!
If it's "La-zhu-way" that ok for him. But as above stated the French Canadian pronunciation is Lazjwah with an emphasis on the wah. Then ther are those who say its Lajoey with emphasis on the joey. Me, I usually say Lazjwah. But thats just me. |

Thanks for all of the nice words.
Paul, I have his autograph on an Old-Timers Day program from the 1930s but not on any cards. I've never been an autograph guy but probably will pick up a signed HOF plaque one of these days. It's just never been a priority for me. Mark, Thanks for the scan of the 1906 spring-training photo. I had not seen it. Hands down, my favorite photo of Lajoie is one that pictures him in street clothes with his long-haired dachshund. One of my favorite players with my absolute favorite breed of dog. Tough to beat that. Joe, I do not know who will come after you first: me or Lichtman. As for the pronounciation, I've always gone with La-zhu-way, and when I hear most media types (I know, not the best litmus test, not by a long shot) and folks in Cleveland pronounce it, that's the way they say it. |

I don't know, I don't know Some say 'twas Na-po-le-on Maybe it's true Maybe so, I don't know The pink sheets don't print Mr. Bonaparte's face No stories about him today Cuz he never could hold down That old second base Like his namesake big Nap La-jo-ie!
