I would think the blank back ones would have been made for every series over several years. It's just one part of Topps proofing process. Which ones survived might be tough to pin down.
Maybe a mention that they're known to exist? Then again, that would leave it open for all the acetates, color process proofs etc, so probably not. The 57's are special. probably a later step in the process to check if the right backs went with each front. Topps did a lot more proofing than the shop I worked for in High school. Does anyone have a good feel for what proofs were made in what order and why? I've got acetates, maybe a color process proof, a small proof sheet on cardboard, a small proof sheet on thin stock, these paper proofs, and a blank back proof on slightly nicer stock than the regular cards. Seems like a pretty complicated process. The place I worked for I think did only a photographic mock up off the masks. Steve B |
