Yeah, sorry to say that if you can take multiple steps in the box before a pitch arrives, guess what?...you're playing SOFTBALL!!!!

I could've played back then with my eyes closed.

Yes, but I've never seen him do anything quite like this. I've seen Ichiro start out in the front 2/3 of the box and then do a quick and short stutter step, to gain momentum towards first base - but I've never seen him or anyone start at the very back of the box and do two complete strides towards the pitcher (and then hit the ball with one foot in front/well outside of the box).

I've seen plenty of clips wherein Ruth doesn't take the extra step, so I always assumed when he did it was to adjust to an "eephus"-type pitch. Maybe he was just showing off. The Babe being the Babe.
