Spalding's BB Guide 1876

Almost all the remaining 1876 Spalding Guides are in really nice condition, and they are all reprints. The chance of finding an original guide that old in really nice condition is virtually impossible. They should have an indication that they are reprints but unfortunately they don't.

I think that what you have is actually a reprint that was made in the early 1900's. If you have what I think that you have look closely at the ads on the inside front and back covers-- i think that there will be mention Spalding winning awards at the 1904 and 1908 World's Fairs. if so this isn't a 1876 item but it may still be old. the first mention seems to be 1878) I have never figured out exactly what the item is and it tends to sell in the 25-50 range on ebay

It does indeed have that ad. For all of my looking through it I never noticed that. Thank you.

So here is the email response from the seller, which I told her is all wrong. She IS misleading people by NOT stating it's a reprint....

"Dear type-card-collector,

You are absolutely correct - I panicked and checked the listing to make sure I didn't claim it was original print. Whew - I think all is good, If you saw that then others will also and know that it is what it is. Thank you ! Ruth

I am going to guess it was this subsequent email I sent- Still, at least an honest seller and all is good....


"Actually, you DID claim it is original by not saying it isn’t. You say it’s an 1876 guide and it’s not. You really should put a big THIS IS A REPRINT in the description. Someone will definitely get fooled on this. Had I not researched it I would have been fooled. What you are advertising is an 1876 guide. By not saying it is a reprint you imply, by omission, it is real. It’s not. No need to panic, just cancel the auction and start it over with a description that is true instead of a lie. It’s not difficult to do the right thing.
